I agree! I have never had any problems with anyone. I know my rights and I am sticking to them. I would have called the PD and had her talk to them. I don't have time to quibble with people about this. Just leave me alone and leave it at that. Most people want to know what I am finding, but that's about it. I pose no threat to anyone. In my own little piece of mind. I printed out a copy of the metal detecting rules for my area, and keep it in my truck, so if there is a problem I will go get it. HH!!

I would have probably made her mad. Being an old cop I probably would have read her, her rights(the right to remain silent part) then told her what mine were. Then tell her I also clean up the hidden dangers lying in the ground, nails, sharp metal objects, etc. too make it safer for ALL children.

Default This 'lady' would have really gotten my back up!!

Metal detecting is a legitimate hobby, it's fun, hurts no one and often does a lot of good. (ring returns, dangerous trash removal {left by slobs I might add}, etc.) It amazes me what some people think about metal detectorists (wierdos, thieves and sociopaths are some of the most negative stereotypes). What a bunch of conformist sheep, they go to the beach and sit on their towels drinking beer (leaving the trash behind) and sucking up the sun; occassionally they go into the water all lathered up with suntan lotion and make deposits due to their own stupidity. Honestly, does a detectorist ever go swimming with a bunch of jewellery on, of course not and other adults should know better. (fortunately they don't know better which gives us something to hunt for and occassionally a return if they had the good sense to put ID on the piece)
The wife of a fellow detectorist that I used to hunt with once told me that she thought what we did was stealing! I asked her to explain herself and equate finding something that has been lost and written off by the previous owner with stealing, SHE COULDN'T! It's the old green-eye monster, jealousy, rearing it's ugly head in the end. Those who conform to the sheep mentality can't figure out how a person would have the guts to go out and enjoy a hobby as an individual, they prefer the safety of the group 'don't stand out from the crowd is their motto. They generally are in disbelief when a return happens because they think our motivation is greed, how small-minded.
The Hunt IS the Thing. Using your wits to determine the best place and technique to find something is the challenge. That's why I love this sport so much and I say sport because I am out in heavy surf, with a bunch of equipment battling the elements, getting physical exercise and challenging my mind.
I noticed on another post that many of the detectorists are from a law enforcement background or a managerial background, hardly thieves, wierdos or sociopaths by any stretch of the imaginations . How misconstrued some of the public are toward this wonderful hobby and how lucky we are to not think that way.
I share a private beach in Bermuda with a luxury hotel and often hunt it. One occassion really gave me a chuckle. A 40something guy who had executive written all over him was sunning himself on the beach with his cutesy, 20something girlfriend. As I passed by them I overheard him say to his girl toy "You see that guy, Honey!" "That's how the poor fellow makes his living, if he doesn't find something today he won't eat." Part of me started to be annoyed at his stupid comment but then I just had to laugh at the guy he was such an ignoramous. I'm a builder and a construction manager, probably making much more than he is, I live on the beach that he gets to only visit for 1 week a year and I'm having fun while he can only lie in the sun and try to destress before he returns to the daily grind. To be honest, I felt a little sorry for the jerk. Half an hour later I found a nice 18k ring and slipped it my pouch. On my way out of the water to my lovely 200 year old cottage I passed the moron as he went into the water to cool off from his suntanning.
"Did you find anything?" he asked rather snidely.
"No" I said, "just a few coins and a loot of bottletops" trying my best to look a little hangdog.
The jerk seemed pleased with my response and said "Oh well, better luck next time."
It was all I could do to keep a straight face.

Well, I have to say, you handled the situation perfectly...I may have left out the part about serial killer, even in jest though...it is always better to keep the piece and move on...She cannot be at that location 24/7, so just come back at a later time...Some folks are very suspicious...just think that if you did not understand the hobby and saw someone around the tot lot your kids were playing at with what appears to be a gun belt around their waste, knee pads on, a long object that looks like something out of a science fiction movie swinging in front of them, and what appears to be a 10 inch knife (LESCHE Tool) strapped to their side...What would you now think???...I thought so...Some folks are overly protective of their children, and I can totally understand with all the stuff on the news and in the papers today...I would of just said "Sorry to disturb you miss, but I truly mean no harm...I will move to another location...no problem..." I had one guy with his kid fetch a park ranger on me one day as I was putting on my belt with all my tools...He thought I was strapping on a pistol belt, and the Ranger comes up to me with his hand on his gun and asks me where my gun is at...took me about 5 minutes to convince him I had no gun, then I showed him my permit to hunt the park...lol.

Hey Liquid...... I'll tell ya what.... That story just "ticked" me off. God Bless you for the way you handled it. That woman will run into someone (sooner or later) that will put her in her place. Its amazing how selfish some people can be. I understand that we all must be protective of our children and be on the alert. However, no one has the right to deny a person to enjoy themselves just because they don't understand what they are doing.
The sad thing about it is that she is passing her ignorance on to her children!

Happy Hunting Pal!!

Jerry
