Default Battery too small??

Well , today i went to the park to do some detecting and needed to get two new 9v batteries. So i go to the store and pick up some brand new Duracells. I put them in and had no power. So i looked at the manual and did everything they said to do in regards to resetting the unit, still to no avail. I'm thinking, wth!?!?! So i put in the old batteries to see if thats what it was or not and there WAS power. So now i'm thinking it was the new batteries and that they're dead. I take the new ones and put them in just to double-check that they were indeed dead and sure enough...no power.I repeated with the old ones and had no power! They still had a small amount of charge left in them and should have worked, but didn't. So while these were still in, i noticed that they were kinda loose in the compartment, so i pushed them up against the terminals tighter and bang i had power. This never has been an issue until now. Are the batteries that much smaller that they wouldn't be able to reach the terminal? Weird so anyways there went my window of opportunity to go do some city park detecting today . Guess i'll go out near the road where people park their automobiles near my place and do some md'ing, after i shim in the batteries so they retain contact with their terminals. Shoulda saved up and bought a REAL DETECTOR. Anyone looking to get a detector who's reading this... throw in another hundred or so and get a real metal detector. The saying"You get what you pay for " still rings true in some cases . Take care guys and have a good 'un. Cory

Welcome to TQ! What kind of MD are you using? Get your money's worth out of it, if you can. If it can find a child's ring, it's working

Can't wait to see some photos of your finds.

Default Good morning...

Thanks fer responding so fast...the type i'm using is a Famous Trails MD7030 Discriminator....and i will say that i have a long way to go in understanding how to work it, as far as setting it to the right specs and all. Quirky is how i'd describe it. It signals when there isnt anything there and i have to figure out how to dial it in. Guess i'll have to go thru the procedure again on how to set it . I'm so green!!

Don't get too discouraged, we all have to start somewhere, huh? I have heard of the Famous Trails line, but don't know a whole bunch about it. Jack D has a Famous Trails CM572, but ended up winning on of the contests on here and upgraded to a Tesoro. Maybe he could give you some insight...

Default Connection

Sounds as though you have a bad battery connection in the battery compartment or maybe a loose terminal lead.

Default Very Strange situation

I would think that if the detector used 9V batteries, that it would have the standard clip that you connect to them...I as an engineer would not trust a pressure fit for a battery connection...for now, just put some foam rubber behind the batteries to take up the space and hold them tightly in place...The detector does not sound like a bad unit for what it is supposed to do. Just get them batts tight, and happy hunting...
