Default Coiled vs Uncoiled

I was wondering if there is electrical interference having your coil wire coiled up around your shaft versus just letting it dangle. Every picture I see of MD's shows the coil wire coiled around the shaft.

thanks

I don't think it matters Joker, as long as the wire does not dangle to close to the coil. I have seen them both ways. Someone with more knowledge may know for sure.

Yeah im not sure bbq. From my limited electrical experience as a mech engineer i do think you produce an electrical field when you coil a powered wire around another form of metal. I guess it matters how much current is flowing through the wire and i would think its realively low on MD's.

Ah just food for thought.. thanks

Hi Joker, All the Manuf. will tell you to keep the Coil wire snug as to if they are to loose or dangly you may get False Signals just like a loose Conection. I always make sure my coil wire is Snug to avoid this. Not up on Electrics but If they recomend it then thats what I try to follow. Hope this helps a little.

Most coil leads are shielded & the shield is grounded so most do not induct a field into the shaft. My concern with a cord hanging loose would be the wear stress at the point where it connects to the coil........My 2cents:)

thanks for the replys and thanks ark.. Inductance, that was the word I was looking for lol. Thats true about the shielding and it should be fine if it is shielded. thanks

Tight does sound right to me also..If the wire is loose it might get caught up on anything in the way, bushes, limbs and the like....Buster....

Great points Arkwater and it just hit me to that if ya do alot of hunting in wooded areas there is less chance of the coil wire snaggin something and getting hung up. Saw a Tip on that where ya can take the Tube shaped Foam insulation for water pipes and put it around the shaft to keep it and tour coil wire protected. Also on the shaft of your water detector so if ya drop it ..It won't sink to the bottom. I'm gonna try that out. I don't hunt wwoods so don't know on that but makes sense.

Being a "newbie" what I'm about to say does not come from personal experience, this was something I'd read & heard others speak of.
I heard that some detectors can reveive an interference from the coil-lead being wrapped around the lower portion of the stem.

For this reason, I used zip-ties to run the cable straight-up the stem for the 1st 12-15", then wrap from there. I use the Ace 250 which was one mentioned where wrapping had/might cause a problem.

Again, I can't verify, back-up, nor explain any facts, just repeating what others have said. I did it as "better safe than sorry" and can't see any reason not to do it, as it won't cause any problems, but might possibly prevent one. Perhaps others have heard this as well?
