Default surviveing extreme cold conditions???

Good morning folks, I was watching the weather channel tracking the Big Whopping snow storm we got here in NC and they kept showing russia at -70F degrees..How in the heck do them folks survive temps that low for months and months..I have worked several Ice storms at 15F and Bout froze to death, what would a house be made of to witstand temps that low, and what are they using for heat, coal,gas,wood..I would think rubber tires would freeze solid at them temps even with chemicals..Anyone with any taughts .I;m a techi-mechanical-gearhead kinda guy and just wonder how things work at them temps.???????..james

Hey James I know I could not do it! I hate the cold weather. My joints hurt now. I have no idea how they stand it, Beale.

I'm thinking Vodka and women may help some.

Hey James,
Don't know if you watched the ice road truckers and seen the different types of problems they face. They have to keep the truck running just so the lines don't freeze. Extreme temperatures do pose some unique challenges. I also can't stop watching that PBS special "Alone in the wilderness" by Dick Proenneke during pledge time. It facinates me how he made his cabin and survived the winters. As for the people, my grandparents had 12 kids. Guess that's how you stay warm.

To be honest in them kind of temps I don't even think you could walk out side for a minute. That is extreme.

Hey James. I'm with most on this cold weather stuff. That's why I came down to Florida..Spent so many years working outside in the stuff. Cant do that anymore for sure..Not sure what they do in Russia..Probably what Rip said Women and vodka for sure.. Any way keep warm all. We are at 31 degrees outside now and I am thinking about trying to hunt later in the day....Buster....

I had some friends in town from Northern Saskatchewan the other day and we were talking about this subject. One thing that they pointed out is that their lifestyles are built around "indoors". They mentioned that usually buildings are built with underground walkways inbetween so you don't have to go outside.

I couldn't do it.

Default -56 F plus windchill factor is the coldest I've had to endure.

When I lived in Calgary, Alberta the winters could be a challenge. The day it was -56F plus was a real challenge, the frostbite report indicated that exposed skin would freeze in 30 seconds, now that is cold. You don't touch anything made of metal with your bare hands unless you want to become attached to it.
I had a devil of a time getting my Audi to start and I was lucky the frost plugs hadn't blown out of the engine block. I made the drive into work and it was treacherous in the extreme. Not much was happening because all exterior work was cancelled due to the weather, you can only pour concrete with special additives and precautions up to -19C. A few of my interior trades managed to show up on the construction site but I decided to send everybody home at coffebreak because the cold was so debilitating. When I got to my car the door would barely open as the grease on the door hinges had turned nearly solid. When I tried to close the door it wouldn't close completely so I pulled on it as hard as I could and snapped the top hinge clean off! I had to drive back to my office holding the door with one hand and driving with the other.
The houses i was building back then had R60 insulation in the ceilings and R40 in the wall cavities, even then the furnace cycles on and off continuously. I've seen frost lines on the studlines of the drywall when it is that cold and you can forget about looking out your windows because they are frosted over except for a small hole in the middle.
These are issues I no longer have to worry about living in Bermuda, Thank Goodness!
The closest we come to snow is a rare hail storm and the pellets melt in a matter of minutes. No market for snowshovels in this part of the world.
Here's a pic of the golf course I worked beside after a big hail storm a few years ago.

Cheers,

BDA
