I enjoy hunting very trashy sites and the key is target separation and trash elimination. Would cleanout the bigger garbage using a detector with a quick reset recovery speed, tone id, and small coil with very little to NO Discrimination in order to sift through and retrieve the good targets and also remove the smaller nuisance garbage.

If the site shows promise of older finds it's a no holds barred attempt at total recovery and use any detector that will achieve that goal. Hunt with larger coils for depth and smaller coils for better target separation. NO single detector is best for all circumstances but would certainly setup your prefered detector to cover as many bases as possible. Just some thoughts. HH Bill

Thank you for that Bill, I have a question for you, tell me if you can, what detector is the "best" all around detector? to me, you get what you pay for, so in your opinion, what is your choice? The reason I ask, is, I am new at this hobby, I look at the review sites, people always give their detector a 5 star rating, from the $250 Bounty Hunter to the $1298 Minelab. How is someone like me, who wants to grow into there machine, not grow out of it to know what machine to buy? You mention other coils, the guy who sold me the White's machine I have never mentioned accessories, I don't know if they make any other coils for my machine..... If they do, he wasn't a good salesman, because I want all the accessories!

Anyway, just a thought I had after reading your reply,

Macktrashtruck, Congrates on getting such a great place to hunt. Grid it, Grid it, Grid it!!
You got yourself a site I'm sure everyone here is drooling over. I do not know what state your in so I am guessing the ground is not frozen. If it's to cold to hunt for you then it's time to hit the library and research the property, also hit the property appraiser office and see what info they have on file. Get all the info on the place you can. Wet ground is the best to hunt, all metals will give off a better halo target. I myself would rather hunt after a rain and in the rain. My main machine is a Fisher 1280 X, so rain and cold does not stop me from hunting, only frozen ground. You do not need all the bells and whistles for your machine, just get you several different size coils. small 3"-5" medium 8"-9" Large 10"-12" extra large 16' 18". Don't go out and get them all till your done cleaning out the trash. The small and medium is what you need right now. ( a small coil will good to check cellar walls and walls of buildings, people did not always trust banks to keep there money in) The first place I would hunt is where I felt that they spent there time outside entertaining and where the children were playing. Large shade tree's, clothesline is great to as you were told. (no washing machine's back then) I also have a feeling that with the size of property the house is on, it has a place that all the trash was buried and could of been a out house there also. I could go on with this but I think every one has given you a lot of Good Info to get ya started. Please keep us up-dated on how you do. Sorry, one more thing, since you have run of property, get ya 4 10' pieces of 1/2" pvc and 4 elbows for your grid, leave them at the house.

Good Hunting
Mark

My suggestion is to learn what ever machine you have inside and out. They all tell you there is metal in the ground. You have to learn what type of metal that YOUR machine is telling you about. Dig everything and pay attention to your machine. You will start to pick up on the little things you machine is telling you. The good finds will come.

i'd definitley to what gordiesgirl said. pick a small area and try to clear out most of the trash, then it will be easier to find the better stuff. i'd try in the front yard, near the driveway(like dylan said) and any big trees if there are any. one time under a big tree i found and indian head penny, a barber dime, and a standing liberty quarter all in one hole.

good luck! let us know how you do!

Default Many detectorists are very brand loyal

This makes it hard to see which detector is going to be the best for your kind of hunting. Assuming you know what type of hunting interests you the most, coin shooting, relics, water, etc.), I would check forum areas that specialize in that type of detecting. You'll quickly notice which machines are used the most for a specific kind of hunting. ie. in the water Minelab Excaliburs are the big gun with various PI machines running a close second. This should help narrow down your search to find the right machine for you. Once you have it down to 2 or 3 machines you should ask around on the forums. Don't be shy about asking most forum members are happy to help and you will get pro and con responses so you can make an educated decision. After that, you have to take the big plunge and lay your money down. Some of the more advanced machines have a steep learning curve so if you are new to the hobby you would be well advised to by a machine that performs well but is easier to learn at first; then if you really like the hobby you can sell the old machine and trade up to a more advanced detector.

Good Hunting,

BDA
