I enjoy hunting very trashy sites and the key is target separation and trash elimination. Would cleanout the bigger garbage using a detector with a quick reset recovery speed, tone id, and small coil with very little to NO Discrimination in order to sift through and retrieve the good targets and also remove the smaller nuisance garbage.
If the site shows promise of older finds it's a no holds barred attempt at total recovery and use any detector that will achieve that goal. Hunt with larger coils for depth and smaller coils for better target separation. NO single detector is best for all circumstances but would certainly setup your prefered detector to cover as many bases as possible. Just some thoughts. HH Bill |

Thank you for that Bill, I have a question for you, tell me if you can, what detector is the "best" all around detector? to me, you get what you pay for, so in your opinion, what is your choice? The reason I ask, is, I am new at this hobby, I look at the review sites, people always give their detector a 5 star rating, from the $250 Bounty Hunter to the $1298 Minelab. How is someone like me, who wants to grow into there machine, not grow out of it to know what machine to buy? You mention other coils, the guy who sold me the White's machine I have never mentioned accessories, I don't know if they make any other coils for my machine..... If they do, he wasn't a good salesman, because I want all the accessories!
Anyway, just a thought I had after reading your reply, |

Congrats on getting a good site Macktrastruck! I really hope you hit some good stuff there. I think you will if you take your time.
Let us know how it turns out, Beale.

My suggestion is to learn what ever machine you have inside and out. They all tell you there is metal in the ground. You have to learn what type of metal that YOUR machine is telling you about. Dig everything and pay attention to your machine. You will start to pick up on the little things you machine is telling you. The good finds will come.

i'd definitley to what gordiesgirl said. pick a small area and try to clear out most of the trash, then it will be easier to find the better stuff. i'd try in the front yard, near the driveway(like dylan said) and any big trees if there are any. one time under a big tree i found and indian head penny, a barber dime, and a standing liberty quarter all in one hole.
good luck! let us know how you do!

This makes it hard to see which detector is going to be the best for your kind of hunting. Assuming you know what type of hunting interests you the most, coin shooting, relics, water, etc.), I would check forum areas that specialize in that type of detecting. You'll quickly notice which machines are used the most for a specific kind of hunting. ie. in the water Minelab Excaliburs are the big gun with various PI machines running a close second. This should help narrow down your search to find the right machine for you. Once you have it down to 2 or 3 machines you should ask around on the forums. Don't be shy about asking most forum members are happy to help and you will get pro and con responses so you can make an educated decision. After that, you have to take the big plunge and lay your money down. Some of the more advanced machines have a steep learning curve so if you are new to the hobby you would be well advised to by a machine that performs well but is easier to learn at first; then if you really like the hobby you can sell the old machine and trade up to a more advanced detector.
Good Hunting, BDA |
