Default want to buy 11 year old son a metal detector for his birthday ----any suggestions ???

My son will be 11 soon and I want to get him a metal detector. We live near Petersburg Virginia so theres plenty of civil war relics to find. That will be mostly what we search for, and maybe at the beach once in a blue moon.

Theres a WHITES dealer nearby. That may be what I get him. I'll probably spend up to...$400 maybe?? This will be something I'll use too, well... him and I will use it together. And he will only use it when I'm with him, not on his own where he can be careless with it and damage it.

So what model for civil war relics would you recommend?

THANKS Brian

Welcome! My answer isn't going to fit your criteria.....but consider the Ace 250. It's 1/2 the cost you're willing to spend, and would out-perform many $400 detectors. Contact Kellyco.....

Default Ace250

Save half of your spending cost and get the ACE250. Top of the line. Maybe you could use the extra money to get maybe a Lesche Digger, Sniper Coil, VP560-570 or some extras for the boy.

Default Buy 2 ACE 250s and hunt together as a father and son team.

It's not much fun to watch somebody else detect but it is a great thing to do with a partner. Sharing the fresh air and your finds with each other. You can always sell an ACE 250 for most of what you paid for it if your son isn't keen on detecting after a while and you won't have to worry about him breaking an expensive detector by accident.

Agree with bdahunter and buster. Get 2 Garrett Ace 250's. About $213.00 a piece and Hands down the best choice. Kellyco will send you a whole box of stuff to go with your detectors.

Welcome to the site Brian! Glad you decided to stop by.

You are in a fantastic area to relic hunt. Lots of history, and not to far from the beach.

Make sure to check out our sponsers and see what they can do to aid you. I will also agree with the others the Ace is a very nice machine. Great starter unit, and seasoned pros are using it also, Beale.

Hi, I Guess I'm Going To Have To Disagree With Everyone. I Think Your Choice Of A Whites Is Wrong Because Of The Weight Factor. Personally I Would Look At A Tesoro Vaquero Or Similar. But That's Only If Your Serious About Continuing Treasure Hunting. I'm Thinking The Little One Will Lose Interest Real Soon. I Would Be Buying A Detector With That Thought In Mind. I Also Think That The Garrett 250 Is Not A Bad Choice It's Just Not My First Choice. It Does Have A Relic Mode And Is A Very Vesatile Machine. If You Have Around $400.00 To Spend Don't Buy One Machine Buy Two. Let The Little One Run One And You Run The Other One. I Think You Both Will Have More Fun That Way. You Probably Could Get Two Garrett 250's For A Little Over $400.00.. Or Maybe A Garrett 250 For You And A Garret 150 For The Little One For Probably Under $400.00.. Keep In Mind That You Can Always Sell One. Metal Detectors Seem To Sell Real Quick And Hold There Resale Value Too.. Be Sure To Check Out One Of The Sites Sponsors Like Ron's Detectors Or Kellyco. Mail Order Is Very Fast And Convenient.. Hey Best Of Luck At Whatever You Decide....Thanks

does this ace 250 have good depth?

I see that kellys has 2 250s for sale, one with just the 6.5x9, and one with the 6.5x9 and 9x12 coils. Whats the atvantage of the 9x12...just to cover more ground?
