Default ? for those who use large trowels

Let me start by saying I haven't used one, atleast for MDing. I used to use a similar styled trowel when I trapped.

My question is....I see some have "teeth" notched into them which claim to saw thru tree roots. Do you acutally use them for this? Seems to me it would be a bit awkward, and the "teeth" don't have any "set" (like a sawblade)....so I can't see how they'd saw all that well. Seems like a small hatchet would be much easier & quicker.

Here's one I'd made, but didn't see the need to try & cut any notches into it. I cut the blade from a section of 6" diameter steel pipe (11ga), and the handle is 3/4" black iron pipe.

Hey Smitty I like your digger very much. I may have said it before but you have some great metal skills! My newest big trowel/digger has no teeth, and it works great. I really do not see the need in a digger like this. My weight/size does the work while using my feet to push.

Your design is great, Beale.

Thanks Beale, problem is I have to spread a couple hours work out over a couple days. The design is pretty generic though, I'm wanting to make one with a rounded nose (as oppossed to pointed). Looking forward to using them come spring.

I failed to mention this is only 28" overall in length. I might have to notch one & see how it works.

It will probably work fine on smaller roots. The ones about finger size or a little bigger might give you a bit of trouble. I carry a set of hand pruners with me for cutting the roots out of the way. So far they have worked out well.
I like your shovel, looks like it will work well.

Nice tool. I use a small Gator trowel with serrated edge. Seems to work good for me..Your design is good for sure...Buster...
