When I first bought my detector most of my friends called me a nerd & said that's what old men do, not a woman, my family thought it was great & are thrilled to hear about my finds, my friends no longer call me a nerd as I've told them about all my finds, people walk up & talk to me all the time on the beach, I especially love talking to the kids, they're so interested & excited when I find something, tho they can tend to hover sometimes but I know it's just their curiosity, tourists are always very nice & impressed when I tell them about my finds, I've even actually got a couple of my friends wanting to get a detector now, go figure....

Default I think it is harder on Teenagers

My younger brother had a bit of a rough go from some of his friends when he started detecting when he was 13 years old. Nothing can be so overbearing as peer pressure from schoolboys. When Morgan found his first ring that quieted a lot of the descent and I still have that plain yellow and white gold band that he gave me for my birthday when I turned 18. I do hope he gets back into detecting as he loved the hunt but the struggles of being an adult and the limits on his time have diverted him from his passion for metaldetcting.

Cheers,

BDA

I have never been asked that question but I am such an extrovert I love it when they ask anything. JC

Aww I totally loved this post!! Well said!!

I agree that it's not a hobby for everyone, and I'm okay with that.

Metal detecting takes a lot of patience and today's world moves so fast - thanks to cable internet connections and aerodynamic cars, four-lane highways and text messages, etc. - I think a lot of people would have to re-wire their brains to properly enjoy the hobby the way its meant to be enjoyed.

Sounds like the guy that sits back and watches the tide roll in is right up our ally! You've got to appreciate your surroundings,... and while I do believe that dedication and persistence is key,... it is absolutely mandatory that you be willing to enjoy life and put all your cares and worries aside while you're out there. ESPECIALLY the worries about what other people think of you.

Good job on recruiting another dood for our hobby! I hope the bug bites him and you guys have fun this weekend! And props to your Princess for being a walking advertisement. Not that it's hard for her I'm sure.

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

Default Good Post Bda

I have another problem right now that I am trying to solve. My two boys are 6 and 7 and a lot of times they get a little bored when I metal detect. They like the idea of finding stuff but get tiered of the hours it takes sometimes to find stuff.
I have already let them swing the metal detector around and they love it but it is hard with kids this young. I try to go out there either by myself or with the family. I work a lot and so does my wife and my wife is one of those people you described more into hanging in the sand and not metal detecting.
Planning on finally getting that excal in about 2 or 3 years that way the boys will be older and they can share my whites dfx and I can start figuring out the underwater detecting. I will probably be asking you tons of questions BDA once I get it so get ready.

Talking While I still have a reprieve before you get you Excal

I'd say stick to playgrounds or beaches with playgrounds and keep the hunts short. The attention span for most 6 & 7 year olds is about as long as a New York Minute. It's great that you can involve your family in this great hobby.
The warm weather is coming which means depositors on the beaches again and a big shift in the sands. Better hurry up and get that Excal.

Cheers,

BDA
