Sorry I had to chime in again. I think this issue is really about social exceptance. Most people are lemmings and follow everyone elses lead and never really do what they know and feel in their heart.

Growing up I made it very clear I was different and I strived to not be just one of the crowd.

I got into writing music at a very young age 6, and from their I was in Rock and Roll bands to this day.

This is another area of social exceptance. Even though most of us love music, I would still have people look at me funny or say wierd things to me about music or me. I would just laugh and feel good about being me.

**maybe they were just laughing about my SPiked hair, spandex and eyeliner** Yes Joker played Heavy metal...

So I conclude this with the words of my Father I will never forget....

Son, stand up and be counted.. I always thought I knew what he meant, maybe im wrong but i know he didnt want me to follow the lemmings...

I think we all know what happens to the lemmings when they get to a cliff.
A friend of mine gave me a plaque a long time ago that said:

That Man is a Success,
Who Thinks His Own Thoughts and Sets His Own Course,
Lives to His Own Standard and Creates His Own Destiny

Be Kewl,

Good post all the way around....Only thing to add...Be your self and like who you are... You still have to live with yourself....If you like to look for coins and rings, then maybe that is what you should be doing... Some people will never understand this hobby and I feel sorry for them. I myself will continue on and maybe find the big find...Pulltabs and Caps........Buster.....

I felt awkward at first and still can be that way at new spots. I am fine once I turn the detector on, so I just get set up quickly. I don't really care what others think because I am doing what I want to do and am not doing any wrong. My in-laws think we're "dorks" as did my wife until after a few times out. She now has detector. My family supports it and Mom has found an old detector at a yard sale and wants to hunt with me. She used to use it to find arrows they shot during bow season. She bought a boat at 55 and was a goalie growing up. I am in an 18 and over hockey league. I just turned 42. I am thinking of stopping for the sake of my knees and back but will hold off untill they can finally knock me off the scoring leader board. I hear lots of comments of "old man" from the other team but not from the people who are above me on the scoring list. They know what it takes to be there. I listen but I don't pay any mind to the opinions of others. I was taught to think for myself and form my own opinion. I choose to be happy, detect, coin collect, rock/mineral and fossil hunt and play hockey. More important though, I choose to be me.
