Default Covering History

I had a chance to go to one of my CW sites because I heard that they had scrapped the ground where some old houses had been. I was about 3 days late. I spent a couple of hours hunting across the street to only find a handful of clad. As I watched the dozers do their work, I couldn't help but think of all the CW history that was being buried in 3ft of fill dirt. This really upsets me....not sure if it's because I missed my chance to hunt it or that I really hate to see history buried like that. I think it's more of the burying that gets me. I did talk to a couple of other MD'rs that told me that 2 US buckles were found before it was covered.

Maybe next time,
Chris

Yea that is sad. I look at it this way, as a nation how can we go forward if we bury our past? Theres ways of getting people out there to discover stuff before they put a shopping mall there. Shame shame shame

Thats a shame.... it would be much better for someone to find it then cover it up forever...

Thumbs down Isn't it Odd that you can Bulldoze history but not Detect it.

Archeologists and Government Agencies will prohibit metal detecting in historic areas because it disturbs the historic milleu and takes the insitu artifacts out of their proper context. The same groups don't seem to have a voice when it comes to stopping a wealthy developer from dropping a bulldozer blade and scraping everything into a pile. Money talks and B.S. walks.
I'm a builder myself but you have to draw a line between profit and the loss of all that history. At least give the detectorists and the archeologists for that matter a grace period to remove the items that will wind up in a landfill and lost forever otherwise. There is always an extended period of time between when the development makes it through planning procedures and when construction actually begins so no harm, no foul.

Sad,

BDA

I saw a show recently about the dams going up in China. They gave the musuems a chance to dig up 1000's of years of history in a few months. It was very sad and history gone forever. Perhaps the underwater guys can do something with it now.

Just think about all the historic items buried under all our highways, malls & parking lots that no one will ever see again

Great points everyone ! They are Always in such a hurry to Throw these things up without giving anyone a chance to see what may be hidden and possibly rescued from being lost forever. Like We Really Need MORE Shopping Malls.

I also think there is a lot of things under built up stuff also. Things go up so fast that sometimes there is no time to search the area. There has got to be a lot undiscovered for sure. You can blink an eye and new buildings appear. I know I have missed a few chances on a few great spots because of this. Not much you can do except watch and ask to hunt if you catch them in a good mood....Buster....
