Some of the native Indians used such things also to mark I believe, changes in the season and calendars. The sun would shine through the hole to a specific location marking these events.

Those devil horns do look like markers.

Default According to the book

"Spanish Monuments and Trailmarkers to treasure in the United States" by CHarles A Kenworthy
1. The hole represents treasure and/or a mine. The whole structure will be a "Trailhead monument"
2. Some have a vein of quartz or just a white rock. This is known as an "Eye Caycher". From here look the signs as the white rock means your on the correct side to start. They would move these rocks for miles to get them to the right place.
3. The rocks pointing are directional markers. The larger ones were for the animals being a bigger trail and usually longer with ore water stops.
4. Look for the letters "V" or "S" or "A". These letters are normally on the trail home or outbound trail.
These are words. S is for Superior meaning the Superior trail and V means "refer to" and will be angled on the outbound trail pointing to the trail marker and A means "at or to" and point to the marker or monument.
5. Look for the letter"X" carved into the rocks. These are found on the inbound trail. Pass on the trail to the left of the "X"
6. Look for a cross cut into the rocks. These will be on outbound trail going home.
5. & 6. these can be easily mistaken one for the other if looking at them at an angle.
So be sure on this as this can help you to know you are heading in the right direction.

I'll post more.
KEEP IN MIND! PLEASE!. This is my interpretation of the book. It does get a little confusing, so I'm just trying to give the basics. Each location has its' own rocks placed for directions and information. SO each location has to be decifered.
Also as a caution! traps were set on mines, etc. Look markings or symbols. SOme are good and others mean danger.
So look and I suggest keeping a note book of all the symbols and signs you find just to help keep yourself organized.

I think you have something really interesting here to pursue.
I'll keep posting as I think I figure this out and wish you best on this.
Keep in touch on this.

Doug
