Default No Wheaties for Breakfast this week!

I was involved in metal detecting very briefly twenty plus years ago. Later after having suffered the indignity of being left in the garage and collecting dust for over two decades I sold my old Whites 5900Di Pro to a friend who I thought would make better use of it than I did. No sooner did I sell the machine that I felt the need to go out and give the hobby a second chance as the obvious reason I never really jumped into the activity with both feet was the total lack of performance offered by the machines constructed in the late seventies and early eighties. I didn’t want to go poking around some of the local historical sites without a good working understanding of my new Uber-Ultra (built by Aren't You Jealous Inc.) as some of those prime hunting sites I might only get one or two shots at before being ousted. So for the last few days I’ve worked the property surrounding my home built back in the late twenties with hopes of finding some cool stuff without breaking a sweat or any prospective local edict. Hay, I found five wheaties in ten minutes with my old 5900 around a well in the back in the early eighties. Surely if that old bucket o bolts could pull out a few noteworthy coins I should be able to cover half my coffee table with the overabundance of silver coinage waiting just an half inch or so below the pathetic limitations of that archaic piece of flotsam that I practically gave away. Ya know the old saying “with power comes responsibility”? No wait… it’s “absolute power corrupts absolutely” Ok… what I’m trying to say is… the GAIN knob is not my friend right now. I have no doubt that in months to come this new little beauty will discriminate the whole of the earths iron core such that I’ll be able to distinguish the size and type of coin passing hands in Korea but for now I’ll have to settle for a deeper understanding of the definition of the word Cherry-Picked. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve pulled a buck or two of dated clad from a small section of my driveway alone but what has become plainly obvious to me over the last few days of detecting is that I’m going to have to dig a boat load of mistaken targets to ultimately make use of both the power and discernment built into my new toy. I suppose I should get a really good back-up detector as well. Anyone got a Whites 5900Di Pro they want to get rid of??? Oh, I did find a token that looked to be pretty old. There are no inscriptions or meaningful markings on the back best I can tell. If anyone knows a possible vintage or what this thing might have been used for I'd love some input.

Default Are you sure there isn't some writing on the reverse on the raised edge?

It sure looks like something but not legible from the pic.
Learning a new machine is always fun. Once you get the hang of it you'll be finding all sorts of kewl stuff, though I like the token.

Cheers,

BDA

Yep, I really underestimated that 5900. It pulled all the surface stuff from around that well down to about 3 or 4 inches. I'm going to have to go to school to have any deeper success. With all the aluminum around the area. Digging every "maybe" aint my style but for a time it's got to be done. As for the raised edge on the back of the token, the idea that some of the apparent chicken scratch might be insricption did cross my mind. Understand that this thing is about the size of a penny and it would have to be some really fine work if it exists. The magnifier I have just isn't powerful enough for me to tell one way or another. Plus at fourtysomething my eyes are losing some of their "up close and personal" I'll try to get a tighter shot with my digital camera lit from some different angles, play with the channels and contrast/lighting in Photoshop and post. Maybe I'm missing something ya'll will catch.

I have some tokens that look just like the 5 cent side, but I've never seen them with backs like that, hopefully Pappy will have an answer! Nice find!

Default 5900 a good machine

Hey Muse I have a 6000 di ser 3 which is nearly the same thing as the 5900.I was pondering on trading off but after using it for a while I'm kind of getting fond of it,and really like it. I'm learning to be able to pinpoint rather well, and can usually identify what is in the ground penny dime, nickelQuarter etc, the poptabs are still tricking me they ,I usually think they are nickels,I'm beginning to reallize that the meter is your friend.learn to interpret it,look real close at the 1-100 #'s the tabs usually read about 2-3 higher than the nickels do.I think the nickels were around 32 or 33 and the tabs were 34-35 IIRC
As for the weight,I'll build up my arms the more I swing it!!so It'll get easier.
Hank
