Default faster goes deeper...it's true

I'm relatively a newcomer to this hobby but remember reading somewhere that the faster you swing your detector the deeper it'll detect,While messing around with our finds the other night, I swung some coins past the coil (bench airtest) and noticed it does pick up a signal farther away if its moved past the coil faster 3-4 inches when moved slow, and 8-9" when moved very quickly.I'm using it a White's 6000 DI SER3., is this phenomenon also true with newer digital detectors?
It sure just doesn't seem logical, but my air test proved it.
Hank

Hey hank it does not hold true for all of the new detectors. My X-Terra 70 is a quick sweep unit. The Quattro by Minelab is a slow sweep machine. I am not sure why but I know it is. I think it really depends on the machine, Beale.

You are right Beale it does depend upon the machine I have an old compass that is motionless it's great for pinpointing but it was made before they came out with discrimation so the biggest drawback is digging a lot of junk but it will null out over iron. My whites is a faster sweep then my minelab but the minelab goes deeper.

As the others have said it really boils down to detector design the filtering system and how quick the processor works to decifer the info into a coherent response unlike many of my posts .

The 4 filter Whites detectors like the 6000 series,XLT,DFX etc require a relatively quick sweep speed for best performance and the 2 filter Classic series require a moderate to slow sweep speed. Other brand detectors as mentioned have various sweep speed requirements. HH Bill

I found this to be true with the DFX...some targets I have passed...get a tone and then it disappear with slow sweep and then a faster sweep I pick it up again...They are deep...

I call it 'forcing the signal', works on most machines once you've established a faint target. I slow sweep a faint target with the right tone on my Excal, then before I dig a couple of short quick passes at different angles, if it's gets better I pull a couple of scoops of sand off either side of the target to bring my coil closer, check it and then dig or don't dig. Generally Dig unless I'm 90% sure it's a deep aluminium can, 3' is a lot of digging in the surf!

Cheers,

BDA

Hi, Yes Hank The Phenomenon You Speak Of Holds True For The Older VLF Machines. Your Whites Is Probably 20 Some Years Old And Required About A Five Foot Per Second Sweep For Optimum Results. Then In The Late 80's Or Early 90's They Had The Sweep Speed Cut Down To About Two Or Three Feet Per Second For Optimum Results. The Older Whites TR Machines Required Little Or No Motion But Lacked The Depth That The New VLF Circuitry Offered. Most Of Todays Machines Require About A Two Feet Per Second Sweep Speed For Optimum Results. Now Some Brands Even Adjust Them Selfs Accordingly To The Users Sweep Speed Which Is Usually Two To Five Feet Per Second. Hope This Helps.......Thanks JJ

Default hi

iv'e been actually trying to sweep real slowly and methodically .my 'mentor' told me to slow it way down and take my time and for me it has been working pretty well. still learning though and i will try the faster sweep when i figure out the correct settings for that type of sweep. low or a bit higher of discrimination and sensitivity??
