I currently own a Whites MXT and am building an arsenal of search coils to get the most out of the machine, a versatile machine at that. Along with the 9.5 coil that came stock with the MXT I purchased the 5" Excellerator II for coin sniping in local parks and added multi target discrimination. Also I bought the 3x6 eclipse shooter (haven't used it yet) for nugget hunting this spring in the Sierras. I'm looking to buy a coil good for deep cache hunting with the ability to discern coins from far deeper than the stock 9.5. I'd sure like some feedback from the folks that have used the bigger coils like the 12"-18" open-configuration excellerators or the larger solid construction double DDs like the 8X14 Whites eclipse. If anyone has used that 8X14 with any appreciable depth increase please let me know as what I have read suggests little depth gain yet better signals in hot ground.. I've heard very deep pick-up with both the 14 & 18" Excellerators. Claims of 3 to 5 feet depth on coffee can sized coin caches on the 18
. Happy hunting folks.![]() Muse |

I use a Whites XLT and have the standard coil..I also have a Hot Head coil that is I think 5 inches for trashy areas..Both seem to work well. You have a nice collection in your detector tooling...Buster....

I also have the XLT and went looking for coils just yesterday on the net. Noticed that coils are plentiful for the DFX and the MXT. try looking on Kellyco store site. great discription of each coil. Good luck

I think that the larger coil would definitely be a benefit for cache hunting, but it may also miss some single smaller coins at depth.

Here I am worried about not having every bell and whistle accessory for my MXT when I haven't come close to mastering the coils I already have. That's the story of my life. I see a new toy and every other iron in the fire gets neglected.
But I'm betting you get better performance with your smaller coil in the trashy spots Buster. I certainly do with my little 5" excellerator. I will admit to some performance trade-offs. Not to mention that it's a little like learning to use a new detector once you swap out the heads. Pretty darn confusing swapping back n forth between two or three during the same hunt. Also, the five inch takes takes longer to effectively cover the same area. Having said that, I'll say this... If the 14" excellerator, does indeed double your working depth over the stock coil for both coin and artifact hunting and if it does this without noticeable loss in discrimination or pinpointing ability…hey. Why not! Then again those are big if's ($200.00 worth) I'd sure like to talk with someone who's actually used one. Isn’t circular thinking a wonderful thing?![]() |

Wow away from my reply for a few minutes and didn't notice the additional responses. Ya I did look at the Kellyco sellection. Not surprizing the coils are given rave reviews. Kellyco makes them or are otherwise financially tied in with these coils if I'm not mistaken. If they weren't to perform as stated the purchaser would be looking at return shipping plus a 30% restock fee.
I noticed that the XLT doesn't handle the excellerators coils. These are by no means the only big boys on the block. I know the XLT is a fine machine and from what I've read more geared for superior silver shooting. Had I not inteded to do some serious prospecting the XLT was going to be at the top end of the list. The lack of the MXTs' ability to multi-tone and having only the three preprogramed modes was a trade off I felt I could live with. On to the larger coils, what's being claimed and touted are the excelerators' ability to target the smaller targets while at the same time greatly increase the depth. |

Muse, I was using the 5 inch Hot Head in a very trashy park/ball field and found quite a bit of coins . I had used the standard coil the week before and found some too, but the little one picked through the trash and found more the second time out... It is lighter and does take more time to cover, but it gets around more areas easier. It does take some getting use to, but it works for real trashy areas.......Buster........
