Wee hours of the morning for most of you folk, but it's just after lunchtime on a Sunday afternoon here, so even though I am suffering terribly from the mother of all flus
, I'm gonna bite the bullet and run the old detector over an old US Navy base site just down the road from my house. Strangely, although we are in the middle of the monsoon season, there isn't a cloud in the sky - it's an omen. This WWII navy base is an interesting spot. Just walking around when the grass isn't too long, I have found badly corroded jeep parts and war time beer bottles - here in Aus, the soldiers, sailors and airmen must have just drank and drank to relieve the boredom - the bottles are cool because the bulk of the ones found around here are conveniently dated with a dirty great 1942 or 1944 embossed onto the bottom. I think I have gotten the detector to work OK after its 10 years of storage, so I'll report back later with my findings...

Well, just got back - grass was up to my shoulders and with this flu, the cross country trek through the rainforest nearly killed me. Not much metal about in the areas which were clear of grass, but a lot of leftovers from when the site was demolished - I found some ceramic tiles as well as some more beer bottles and a spent .45 cartridge.
Not too good hunting, but it never is when the grass is that long. Speaking of beer bottles... Quote:
We have so many bottles around that as a fundraiser for the ABMM (museum), we were going to gather up as many as we could, make some labels and a sell them as a home-brew beer kit called "Bunker Beer". Still might.
