Default selling gold and other jewlery

I have some jewlery that I want to sell. This includes a sterling silver necklace that I found and also a couple of gold earrings one with a purple diamond that I forget what it is called. Before I sell it I would like to have an idea of what it is worth? How can I find out about the price? Maybe not the exact price but a ballpark figure? I assume that it has to do with quality of the actual jewlery and a scale for weight and some convertion charts or something. Is there some kit that you guys have that can give you an estimate of the jewlery value? or are some of you guys like BDA and others so experienced that you know the value of jewlery just by looking at it? I am going to a couple of places this week and just go to a couple of places and appraise my jewlery but if the price sounds too low I might not go for it. I just want to have an idea. For example if I have a piece of jewlery that I know it is worth $200.00 I would not mind taking a few dollars off the price and getting 170-180 but I just don't want to get ripped off and get like 50 or 60 bucks. Let me know. Thanks.

Default There's a big difference between wholesale and retail when it comes to jewellery.

Wholesale or a little better is what you can expect to get when you sell a used piece of jewellery, which is still significantly more than what you get if you melted it down. Plain gold bands and the like I would send to the smelter, good condition jewellery that is special I would keep or sell through E-Bay or the Classifieds.

Cheers,

BDA

If you have an auction house around you may want to check it out. I go to a local one as often as I can and it seems that you can't touch jewelry or coins for a decent price, usually higher than I'm willing to spend and higher than I could buy on eBay, unless you buy a box lot and get lucky.

I would suggest going a few times just to get the feel for what kind of price the jewelry is going for. Keep in mind that they usually keep 25-35%.
