Default Queen Victoria..oldest monarch on Canuck silver

From the land ofthe Bluenose...thought I'd share with you the oldest monarch shown on Canadian silver coins. Canada was founded in 1867 with our decimal currency beginning then. Before confederation Spanish, British and colonial tokens were used. Shown here are ones from 1871 to about 1900 and include the five cent (referred to as a fish scale), ten cent and 25 cent. The 50 cent piece with Vickie eludes me...maybe this year!

I have a 1962 canadian quarter that has one solid silver color. What metal was canadian quartes made out of in '62? What's the last year that Canada minted circulating silver coins? Just curious. Jason

Default yo Swizzle...history of silver in Canadian coins

From the land of the Bluenose....up till 1921 our 5 cent pieces were made of silver and called fishscales as they were about the size of a good herrings scale. In 1921 all but a few of these were recalled to the mint and melted down with the nickel nickel being introduced. These are called large 5 nickles by some. To get a 1921 fish scale is indeed to get a great coin that has value as about only a dozen are known.

From then on the 10,25 50 and silver dollars where minted till 1966. !967 was our centenial as a country and 50% and 80 % silver coins were minted and again in 68 50%. Not all 67 and 68 coins were silver though. Now all are cheap alloys and the only silver is in numastatic coins.

Default yo Marine..regarding centenial coins

From the land of the Bluenose...what you have sir is a bird on the back in flight. The 5 cent has a rabbit, the dime a macheral and the quarter a cougar...which is a great looking coin! These were all part of the centenial issue of 1967.
