Default metal detecting for gold

hi everyone... can anyone shed some light on this for me... i want to bring my detector to a gold claim and was wondering what the best mode is to be operating in when looking for nuggets.should i be in VLF frequency with little to no sensitivity and discrimination? or should i almost max out the sensitivity and go with some discrimination? lemme know if you have any suggestions! thanks guys and take care...c

Default I've heard ...

To test it out on apiece of lead, being very similar in density, conductivity etc. I've heard testing with a small nugget of lead will give you an idea as to how you'd be able to detect gold. Unfortunately mine will not detect a piece of #6 birdshot unless it's nearly touching the coil.so unless I'm in an area with some large nuggets, pretty much useless

thanks Hank, much appreciated... i actually found a heavy lead weight at a beach yesterday with my machine and it gave a nice signal. if the gold in my region were as big as the weight i found, my machine would have no problen seeing it, so thats good to know. i might try what you said with smaller lead weights to see how little of a piece my machine will see. thanks again!
