Good Luck to you and remember you are not in this alone!

Indy do you need more Memory, I know that slows everything down.

I dont think so Anne. Husband bought this computer for me last year, and he said he bought the highest memory for it, because he knows how much I like to be on here.
I think I left that last virus on here way too long, and it has messed some things up. I'm going to get a hold of someone to look everything over and see what needs to be done.
Until then as long as I'm able to get on here, I'm happy...even though it takes up to a min sometimes to open a new page

A menu will pop up the last tab should be "Start up" . click that tab. A menu will pop up with all your programs starting when in boot up. Beside each is a box with a check in it. Uncheck the first item. Leave the rest checked. Click ok, and exit that menu box. Back to start and click restart. Do that for each and every box in the drop down where the checks were rechecking to show a check on the last item when you previously shut down. When you get to the boot up and it starts normal with out errors it will be that last program you unchecked that is causing the problem. either delete that program or reinstall it without deleting . Then go back to the Run, Start up , and check the program that you unchecked . It should be ok.
Another way if your running Windows XP is go to START, PROGRAMS, Assec. (which should be at the top of program list) Click find System tools. Find SYSTEM RESTORE. DO NOT CLICK RESTORE TO ORIGINAL. Click to restore to a previous date. Decide on the calendar at which point the system boot up began giving errors. Go past that date to a date that is bold . click that date, the start . Windows XP has a program that will roll back the registry to an earlier check point date . Some files can be lost , Such as recent installed programs , edited up dated files etc. its wise to back up those files
If the restore to earlier time dont work you can undo the restore . If all this dont work , Take to a tech
Thanks leesumm,I tryed some of that but I dont like to mess with to many things as I've messed things up before and just added to my agrivation.

I dont usually have any problems as long as i do the virus cheak, clean out the temp files etc.But any site with all that flashy crap like on my space can be very slow and annoying ! I connect at an average of 48000 bps and most sites work fine, not as fast as highspeed but I've compared it to highspeed on other pc's and mine seem's to go almost as fast.I had a program called turbo something or other awile back that may help you.You can set It to load without all the graphics and speed's things up quite abit.I'm hopeing spring will be here soon and I wont have time to be online all the time anyhow Thanks Indy and good luck with it and if all else fails just say the heak with it and go detectin !

You can run a copy of Linux on those older machines and it will be faster and safer from infections. Give it a shot. Just download a copy and install it. You will be glad you did.

I run a program that is called System Suite Pro. It is a Virus, Spyware, System checker , System maintenance ,firewall .Everything buil into one program. It will clean the registery, do a defrag,do a disk repair of files . monitor system files for viruses, spyware and upgrade to new found viruses. This is a bit expensive but the only one do it all maintenance program I have found .

There are a lot of virus /spyware scanners now that won't give you tech support if you are running windows 98. My Dad had that kind of problem and upgraded to xp. I'm using about 4 free spyware virus ad aware programs from CNET.Tons of free downloads. Something elsr that causes problems that people don't realize is the battery on the mother board. Most take a 2032 batt. It will cause you to loose info over a period of time.

There's maintenance that should be done routinely on computers, such as:

Disk Cleanup, I use CCleaner, it's a free download and will do the cleanup (delete temp. files, history, cookies etc) and empty your recycle bin. I will also do a basic registry repair.

Disk Defrag, I use the one under Accessories, System Tools for this.

Also, a good, up-to-date anti virus and anti spam ware program are important. I keep mine set to get automatic updates and run automatic scans.

All of the above will go a long way to keeping your computer running safely and smoothly. I use Norton Internet Suite 2007 and have been for years. Also, I use the free version of Adaware which works fine for me.

Also, like leesumm mentioned, I turned off all items in my startup that I don't need to run at startup, which is quite a bit. That let's your computer start up quicker and uses less system resources.

And one of the best performance upgrades, like Anne said is a memory upgrade.

Inspite of all this, you can still have problems, so I think it's a great idea to have an external hard drive to back up your documents, pictures and anything else important to you. You can also do a full system back up but if you have a major problem that cannot be fixed, you may not be able to restore that system specific backup to a new computer. If you're hard drive is big enough, you can always have a seperate backup of your personal files.

This sounds dumb, when you uninstalled the program and before reinstalling it , did you try to boot up and see if there was an error code ? Or did it boot up ?

Same thing no matter what I did.I bought the adware program today and it removed 243 problems but apparently dident remove the one that is giving me the problem. If i do a search for antivirus it redirects me to the stopzilla site and is now allso directing me to a yahoo survey(using altavista) The adware is suposed to come with 24 hour tec support but so far all i can find is an email add. so i sent them an email to ask how to get in touch with the tec as it dident cure the problem. If all else fails It looks like great weather for a bonfire !
