I didn't wear knee pads either, when I started, until I realized that all my jeans had a hole in one or both knees.

I ended up with a lot of "Cut off" jean shorts.

All of the above. Also I'll lay down on my side sometimes and dig. LOL. 54 years young.

I kneel, cut, and dig. That is, I often wear knee pads, kneel down (being left-handed, I'm on my right knee most), use my drywall saw to cut a plug around the target, then pop the plug out with a solid cast-aluminum gardning hand-spade. Works for me. I dump my dirt on a piece of a rubber pond liner that I always cary with me. Keeping the knee pads in the truck along with another pair of shoes means that if I get sick of work and need a break, I can cut out for a while and not damage my pants! The ground is hard on pants, and out here, we've got those darn goat's head thistles and lots o' cactus. Oh, I also wear gloves which saves on the hands. And, I'm "under 50" at 41.9+.
