Default No laughing...

Mom said she bought a detector at a yard sale for a dollar. It was in her garage so she didn't have the name of it. Yesterday, I went to a friends inn for a hunt and Mom showed up with her detector. I wasn't allowed to laugh so neither can you. It was a Goldak Commander Model 720. This thing looked like it was right out of a horrible 50's Sci-Fi movie. I did a bit a searching last night and found that this thing could have been made in the 50's or 60's and that it was made to locate underground pipes and cables, more industrial than anything. Here is the kicker... they still make it! I found it on their website, then found a distributor and they sell new ones for $415. Her's is a shiny silver but looks pretty much the same. Anyone ever hear or see this detector and more importantly, do you know anything about it?

I think it will be great for the beach but I am not too sure on depth. It must work if they still make it. She will also try it with headphones next time and hopefully be a bit less distracting. I tried to find an owners manual but think the new one hasn't changed in fifty years so the new manual will probably work. Now I have to get her a long handle scoop. She spends a bit of the summer on DE beaches. The best part was the only photo I found of it. I think the same guys did those school videos for health class.

Here is a pic from Google books:

Hey for a buck you can't go wrong! It may actually be looking for an electrical signal? Good luck with it, Beale.

Now I have to teach her to use it. The coil is huge and pinpointing will be trouble. I guess I have to get her a hand-held pinpointer. I think I might be better off getting her to retire the collector item and buying her an F2 or a 250.

You know you can turn a profit on it, if you don't like it. Might be a "home run".....you never know. Great buy, indeed.
