Default I got my detector ready

I saw the workers there today. Most likely they will probably fix it before I get there. The good thing is that they seemed to be tearing out more stuff as well so when they fill the street they might also uncover some more and leave it for another day. Really do not care too much about finding stuff. It is one of those things that I wanted to do before and never got a chance to do it. Hopefully today will be my lucky break.

I've never had anyone turn me away from torn up sidewalks. If possible I do it before they arrive or after they leave, but have done it when a long stretch is being torn up and they are a good distance of where I am detecting. Some even showed interest and we talked about our finds (they eyeball, I, MD).

If the forms are laid you may miss out on some stuff. I've found at least 90% of my stuff on the edges. Some use steel forms

As to moving the barricade, I wouldn't move it, but side step it somehow. They probably wouldn't appreciate seeing a barricade moved, even temporarily?

Default dug up sidewalks

Yes I had an opportunity like this at a local city park. The park was the oldest in our area. They were digging up the entire park, and redoing it. I didn't get out there until others beat me to it. They went over the entire dug up park, but I am sure they didn't cover the uncovered sidewalks. I found quite a few very old wheaties there. One was a 1910 I think. I could barely make it out until I cleaned it. After cleaning it, I couldn't tell it was a wheatie any longer. I ruined it. I cleaned it in the hope that I could make out a mint mark. Oh well, a lesson learned. If I were you, I wouldn't touch the barricade. If you move a barricade, and someone steps in there and gets hurt, that would not be good for detecting in general. If you can, get permission to hunt, if at all possible. If you have to move a baracade to get to the sidewalk, put it back as soon as you get by it.
Not too far from where I live is the city of Durango Colorado. They have banned all metal detecting there on public property because some people would dig big holes looking for old mining equipment or other relics, and mess up the parks. We have to be careful to always leave the places we hunt as good or better than we found them, or this is what can happen to our great past time.
Good luck,
Robalou

Default Thanks Guys

Yes oz and robalou you are all correct. I will move the barricade to either side when I am detecting and put it back exactly where I found it. This area I'm not sure if people lived here a long time ago but I will give it a try if I get the chance.

Anymore I will always ask someone. Back when I started detecting I didnt always ask permission, and always felt uncomfortable. I also found it was hard to concentrate for me without permission, but that is just me. Also depending on the site it could hurt our hobby by not asking.

Any construction site has potential!

Default Jazdo

I can understand that. When I go to private property I always ask permission but I believe that the street is public property. Also this street is around parks and bridges they are not even next to someone's house. Anyways I am going today at 6 P.M. I do not think any construction people will be there.
