I recall my ex-son-in-law telling me of things he had found while growing up and living in the old Stone House, or Tavern, that Robert E. Lee used as a headquarters during the Civil War here in West Virginia.
Several years later, it dawned on me that this whole area played a large part in the Civil War and that there was basically just certain useable roads back then and that everything else was done in pure wilderness hell. I also realized that because of these things, My own property lies smack in the middle of major movements of thousands of foot soldiers and cavalry. I can't recall how I found the treasure hunting sites. It must have been something to do with begining to research Civil War movements in my area, but they have fit in very well and proved to be indispensable in knowledgable reference. This all got started back around the begining of this winter and now I'm just butt-hole deep in the research part. I haven't bought a detector yet, but have done the research on them and know what I'll be able to afford for my purposes. I'm not in any big hurry to start detecting because I'm greatly enjoying the research part and want to be extremely exact about it, but when I finally make ready to go out in the field, I won't have to go far because my own property has some awesome possibilities that should prove to be a great learning experience for a beginer with a new machine. Hooked ? UNdoubtedly. Last edited by corklabus; 03-20-2008 at 10:58 PM. |

As a kid I got started with arrow heads, then later on I was playing around with some welding rods and dowsed an antique german silver serving spoon in the yard which my mom still has.

For me, it's that impossible-to-describe rush of a feeling that you get when you find something long lost or hidden, and are actually holding a peice of real history in your hands. Be it an old coin, a relic, or what most others would consider "trash", there's just something about seeking the hidden, and finding history. Great question!

A customer of ours owns a shop here in town that sells carpet on one side & metal detectors on the other, last year he & his wife came in & they showed me & my boss some of the NICE fat diamond rings he's found that she now wears, I kinda sat on that then one day was watching the Travel Channel & they showed a guy detecting the beaches in south Fl so I hopped in my car & went to his shop & bought my detector.

I've been a coin collector, and wanted to get a metal detector to look for old coins, so I wouldn't have to buy them.
