Camera!
Most of us have seen great just-found-it photos from detecting trips. Somewhere (I think on this forum) there is a post mentioning the usefulness of photographing a great detecting spot for future reference.
I've noticed with some alarm the number of old homes and businesses that are being razed locally. While you can't stop progress or detect them all, it would be a great idea to start your own photo archive. Take pictures of interesting spots around your local area. Identify them with the location and date. That way, if the local landscape changes, you have your own file of potential sites to search in the future. As the old adage goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words". We all know how our memories of a place can get "fuzzy" over time. That photo file can literally help keep them in focus!
I also collected a few photographic treasures in our downtown area. There are a couple faded advertisements painted on local buildings. You all are probably familiar with what I am talking about. They usually cover the side of a building and get painted over or just fade away. I'm a fan of old advertising, so I jumped out of my truck and took a picture of one the other day. A great way to preserve a little local history that most people probably don't even notice anymore.
