School yard question

HI,
I know i can hunt at the city parks here, but what about school yards on the weekends? Is it legal? Reason i ask is because some schools have a fence and gate that are locked around the playground. Is it ok to jump the fence and hunt? A public school is owned by the city like a park right? Been curious about this, and i remember people posted about finding suff at the tot lots and swing areas. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Kid, I would NOT jump a fence and locked gate to hunt a school. Many schools here in Colorado are posting no trespassing notices and a person can be arrested for violation. Even if your school is not posted - it still is not "public" property in the same sense as a public park. Save yourself some un-needed grief and ask for permission...just my opinion...

I hunt the school yards around my town and have not had a problem.
Of course they are not fenced in though. If they are fenced and the gates are locked I would not jump the fence to hunt. You don't want to give detectorist any unwanted press.

EPC said it all...Talk to the supper before going in. With all the news worthy events going on in schools you DONT want to be another news story. A fence is there to keep people out or in, jumping it isn't a good idea.

Thanks for the replies. Guess i was not thinking too clearly about jumping a fence. It should be ok for schools that don't have a fence i assume.

I am new to the hobby and definately do not want to give Detectorists a bad name starting out. So i will not jump any fences and will go to the schools to ask if i can detect there. I work at a daycare and one of my jobs is being a bus driver, so i am at the schools everyday. Thanks everybody. I am sure if i jumped a fence, i would probably pull a muscle or something.

Not a bad question to ask at all...I was at a public school with Buster this weekend, he found a 194X Mercury Dime...a long the front of the property by the bushes. Ask someone in the admin section of the school, I'm sure it will be ok as it is a public facility.

With all the PC stuff in our society and all the school bombings and terrorist scares they are now locking them for a reason. Some old lady will see you in there and you'll have the SWAT team on you like a swarm of bees. Find an open older school or a country school. Some people just don't know what a medal detector does. HH.

Most schools here are fenced with no trasspassing signs. I ask permission from the principals and everyone so far has said yes. I do repairs for teachers at one local school and was given a key to hunt on weekends.

Down here in Florida, they have started fencing off the school yards and locking them up...I used to hunt a bunch a few years back, but not now..If there is no fence or signs, then I would hunt it...I would ask permission to hunt the grounds if they are locked up..and that should work out good...The schools are also installing cameras here on the outside...I don't do good on photos because they always add extra weight to my already trim and buff frame...I would still ask...Buster....
