I would NEVER use my detector without a coil cover.
It is cheaper to replace the cover than it is to replace the coil.

I always use a coil cover, except on my 4x6 DD shooter, cause it has a built in one. Use RTV silicone sealer to attatch the cover, and you wont have any pesky black sand, infiltrating underneath, and getting between the coil and cover. This can happen when you are hunting even in very shallow water, the sand you stir up is microscopic, has a way of infiltrating. Once, at the end of the season, my Classic SL II was acting real weird, I pulled the coil cover and removed 4 tablespoonfulls, of black magnetic sand !! Solved the problem sealing it up with RTV silicone, a good tip from another md'er !! Rich.

If anyone wears a hole in a coil from general use i would say they got more than their money's worth. Bought over a dozen used coils without covers that were a bit scratched but worked great and bought 2 newer Whites coils with covers that looked great but the inner windings were loose and performance was less than stellar. Don't know if a coil cover would help but think it's a matter of proper use and not abuse. If a coil cover makes you feel better than get one but not my #1 priority except for the frequent traders that use them as selling points. Just my opinion of course and most likely a bit against the grain

I used them on all my detectors before but I have to go with Bill on this one. I would say if your swingin in real tough terrain the Yes but For where I'm swingin I Don't. They are very durable and as said if ya wore a hole in it then ya more then got the use out of it. Besides.. I got tired of Fighting ( Cracked a couple tryin to get them off ) To get them off . JMHO !
