Exclamation Ok, it's time to get 19th century...

...get it? 19th century? Medieval...? Ok, not so funny...

I gotta find some new places to hunt... I've worn my places out... I live in a big city, so there's GOT to be some more places to hunt... schools just havent panned out to be all that great... parks either, and they're just SO full of junk... the oldest parts of town are the WORST parts of town, and I don't want to end up like Clark Griswald asking for directions back to the highway...

Any ideas?! What avenue of research should I go down now?

Should I:
• Bite the pull-tab and find somewhere manageable (size-wise) and just clean it out?

• Spend gas money I don't have driving around looking for vacant lots that I can research with the tax office?

• Knock on doors and ask people if I can hunt their yards? (I wouldn't ever do that....)

• Take a road-trip to some small towns and do some investigative work?

I'm just kinda out of ideas... and I'm getting to the point where I don't want to go back to any of the places I've been in the past few months... I guess I just don't have enough faith in them to produce... maybe that's my real problem?!

HELP!

I too have felt the same way at times about old places. You know though I will say that as time goes by coins will move in the ground and you fill find them. ones that get turn on edge that move to a flater postion when the weather changes. I know it sounds funny but I tend to go in teh reasearch mode when site are hunt to death. that gets my mind off of it and i feel like hot the old spot again. Another thing I do is just about any friend I have knows that I hunt and I can count on them for a place or 2 to hunt. It begens to open doors. If you have a friend or a co-worker not in the hobby yet show them the hobby bet they find some land to hunt fast and bring you along .and if all else fails MOVE TO TENNESSEE lol just playing I do know how you feel though sorry about the lack of faith it does suck though. Oh yeah one other thing I do to find hunting grounds is ask poepl that you know if they have lost a item in the yard that you would be willing to look for it provided you can hunt the rest and have them ask friends you never know .

Thanks Will Lane

I understand. I live in Houston. there are some older places I want to detect, but not very safe. rough areas.

Maybe a lake close by that would use alot of gas to get to?

I live in a metropolitan area between Philly and Baltimore and i'm talking gridlock traffic, trashed parks ,just about every public access area for detecting is hunted to death. Most of the farmland is bought up by developers and the rest is bought by the state and no detecting allowed. So what now, i look for older homes and especially ones for sale with commercial or industrial zoning and approach the owners with an honest preamble of my intentions to preserve any finds as a hobbiest and show respect.I've gotten good results getting permission. As far as the hunted out trashed places i've gotten super results using a machine with a numerical vdi meter and small coils. It's a new ballgame hunting older trashed parks and schools ETC. but it can be done and be fun with different approach and equipment.I just figured you gotta go with whats available and make the best of it. Knocking on doors is not that bad. You'll get a No or a Sure or a can I watch? You might also note the empty houses (older) that have a For Sale and go in to the realator in person and ask them and assure them you will not disturb anything or offer to cut the grass in exchange for a 2 hr hunt. The cutting grass works great when you are wanting to hunt an older place where the people are elderly. You don't have to hunt the same day you cut their grass.

Default Options 3 and 4

Hi,

I kinda go with the last two. Chances are good if you knock on someone's door, they probably won't shoot you. But I wouldn't carry my MD with me; you'll look like a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman!

If knocking on doors doesn't suit you, use one of the prepared permission slips and drop them off at the houses you'd like to hunt. Included a returned addressed STAMPED envelope for them to return it signed to you. That could work if you catch someone just right.

I've had good luck at some of the playscape-type playgrounds here in my town lately, that and the swing set areas. And living in a city, getting out of the city would be a nice change, doncha think?

Default And just to be a pain in the arse ....

.... and show off my ridiculously old and outdated college education, Medieval is defined by most pinheads (that's Ph.Ds) as beginning at the fall of the Roman empire and ending around the 11th century. That's all for today, class.

Thumbs up another couple ideas

first put an add in your local paper offering your metal detectoring expierence, offer to find lost rings jewelery, keys, etc. this will open new places to hunt you offer to try to find these item for them and in process you might find a few old coins for yourself and second,my fav., get a kid involved in our hobbie take them out hunting and when you knock on someones door and ask if you and your kid can do some hunting in there yard most people don't like to say no to a childs face! they will see you sharring a possitive hobby with our youth and that is a worth while thing these days!!!good hunting to all

In these cases, guns are the solution . Seriously, you could buy one handgun and a few extra clips, head to those places with little to no worry.

You could find a rental store and post a sighn.I went to the local rental store and they told me that they used to rent metal detectors but the last person to rent one did not know that you couldent submerge it.So that ended that.but i got a few detecting jobs this way,and permission to hunt.Or you could do what i did and get scuba certified and hit the water.good luck ....Terry
