Speaking as an energy conservation person (my job at Honeywell)...not only are electronic ignitors for stoves, water heaters and furnaces more safe - they save a significant amount of $$$ annually in fuel costs. If any one is planning to replace one or more of these items, I'd highly suggest using a model with an electronic ignitor.

Thanks for the guidance, guys! I will definitely call my propane company and have them check out the water heater and I will be looking into replacing it with an electronic ignition model. You know, I'll bet the propane company will have some kind of deal to offer on them since they're on a campaign to have everyone conserve as much as possible.

I need to have the HVAC guys out too while I'm looking at stuff in the mud room.

Scary situation indeed. Glad all turned out o.k. DRVER, CREEKRAT are right. Even ten years ago they built water heaters, cook stoves, dryers, etc. with systems that shouldn't allow this to happen. When the appliance calls for heat you hear the clicking which is the electronic ignitor lighting the pilot light, which in turn heats the Thermo-couple which opens the gas valve and allows the gas to come in to the all ready lit pilot light. Usually if they fail no gas comes in at all. Make sure it's the water heater and not something else leaking.

I agree with Creek, the thermo couple should have kicked the gas off.
