Default detaching coil from whites dfx

Some connection seems to be a bit off between my detector and the coil. there is like a little knob that you turn to open it but after that what is the next step? do you just pull the cord or is there a specific way to detach the coil? I have never done this since I bought the unit and there might be salt, dirt and stuff caught in there that might be giving me a bad connection. From time to time it seems to like turn off for a bit then it turns right in again. It's like it takes a little snooze and comes to. Kinda like when you are driving and get very tiered and close your eyes for 3 or 4 seonds then you open them again and come to. let me know.
I am at school cleaning my desk and stuff but since leaving early I'm going to a park to detect. There are 2 sand playgrounds and do not think anyone has tried detecting there. It is also an older park.

Smartfox, the coil on my Whites XLT comes off pretty easy..Just turn the screw top where it plugs in and then pull that back and then gently pull the end out of the connector..when puting it back in..just line up the notches ..they are on the area where the wire plugs in and the end if the coil wire..It will only go in one way..be very gentle with this..do not force this back in..it will go in when the marks are lined up...Hope this helps..if not, you might want to call Kelly co and ask for tech support..they will help you through all of this I am sure...Good luck..Buster......
