Default "That sounds a little Ghoulish to me" UPDATED 6/21

I've heard metal detecting called alot of things...usually it is called weird by my friends...but ghoulish???? Is she nuts???

Last night my DH finally secured permission for a new site I scouted out in Swarthmore. Anyone who knows the college or the area will really understand...Swarthmoreans...tree hugging academians...a little different ...is what they are known to be.

We were minding our own business, detecting the yard of this property when i noticed an older woman watching us. Then her husband was watching. Then she asked, "What are you doing." So I explained that we were looking for old coins and that we had permission from the builder who owns the property. She expressed her opinion that any finds should then be turned over to him and I sort of laughed and said, "well you've heard of the finders keepers rule haven't you?" She wasn't laughing with me. Well I explained that dug coins aren't often worth much anyway. She walked away from me saying..." That sounds a little ghoulish to me."

So I guess she is entitled to her opinion. Do you think detecting is ghoulish? What do you think she meant??? My DH thinks she might have a body buried in her yard.

UPDATE: I spoke with the builder today and he told me that the old biddy is the previous owner of the home I"m detecting!!! I told him to tell her that if I found anything with a family name on it I would return it to her.

A little Ghoulish to me is Archaeologist digging into a 4,000 year old grave site to see what happened!

Digging up a grave is ghoulish, digging coins you've located with your metal detector is just plain Fun! You're not Ghoulish but that old lady sure is Foolish.

Cheers,

Debby, I wouldn't worry too much about what the older woman said...Some people just don't get it...Even if you talk nice to them...Well she might have a body buried there..Just don't dig too deep...Happy Hunting and hope you dig up the good stuff...Coins....Buster......

I think she did not have a clue as to what you were doing. Even after explaining it to her she did not "get it".

No worries Debby shes ia just "teched". That is what my old english teacher woud say, Beale.

Ghoulish is definately a new one. Most people really don't understand this hobby. I usually try to ignore onlookers, although, I haven't really had any obnoxious encounters yet. OH well.

I agree, finders keepers. Unless a property owner expresses interest before hand.

Maybe she knew that there was some family pets buried in the yard and one of them was named 'coins', so when you told her that you was looking for coins, she thought that was ghoulish.

There always the possibility that she was just a nasty old sourpuss who hates the idea of anybody else having any fun because she's so miserable herself. Stinking thinking is what my father always called it, there's not much you can do with those types except leave them alone. Don't let an old biddy put a damper on your hunt, Hon.

Kewl,

BDA
