Very interesting posts and some great ideas. I have 2 American cars one Olds, the other a Saturn. I bought the Saturn new, the Olds is a 1994 and my beater car. I sold a great big 4x4 truck for it.

As gas prices continue to rise people will choose what they can afford. I actually wish I could get a little 4 cylinder to replace the Olds.

I grew up on a farm. Back home Pick Up trucks still out number cars. 95% of them are from the big 3. Not many others in the mix. Both my dad and brother drive trucks back and forth to work.

I dunno what the answer is but I do know I am now only MD'n about 1 time a week, Beale.

I think G-GIRL has a good point. big oil should get together with big auto and make cars that get better gas mileage then the imports. A lot of Hondas etc are made right here in the good old USA with american labor. When our cars can sell at a diecent price and can hold up as good as those others than I will buy American again...

I've never had a foreign vehicle and probably won't. Not that I don't ogle them in the parking lots and envy their gas mileage and in some cases durability. But I'm from a small town and I went to school with most of the guys who own dealerships in town so it's pretty likely I'm going to keep buying from one of those guys. My town doesn't even have a dealership for any of the foreign models. No Mazdas, Hondas, Subarus... none of them.

I'm really sort of lusting after a Buick Enclave. I'm pretty sure I won't ever have one but I think they're pretty hot - sporty, 4wd, and luxury. If I don't go with an Enclave I may go back to a Grand Cherokee.

I do empathize with the plight of the auto workers. My small town has seen its share of job loss and it was devastating to a lot of families whose members worked in the same plants for generations.

I also feel for the auto workers. Its hard to believe we can even compete with the foreign auto companies being most of the foreign ones pay very low wages compared to our workers. Its not just auto workers tho,I think it is pretty much across the board in most industries.Everything seems way outa whack here, who the heck can buy a house just starting out?Used to be u could,I did and so did everyone else!In the 70's I was making 8-10 bucks an hour and bought a new hose for $26,000.Its a little over what I made in a year.Try buying a house now for what ya make in a year!In 1971 I bought a new car for $2500.00 or about 20 percent of my yearly wage, now its about a third. What is the answer?Do we need to make everything we need and not import? We dont have the vocational skills being taught to anyone anymore. Were a country of people providing services more so than actually manufacturing thing. We cannot afford to lose the auto industry on top of all the rest.I see nobody running for our highest office who can solve our problems. At the rate were going we'll end up a socialist country if we aint real careful!Sry if I get carried away, but believe me,we are in a very critical time in the history of our country.I urge everyone to really study the issues of our time and get out and vote!
