Default "Technical" question

Good morning,

I'm trying to improve my pinpointing and I'm wondering exactly on a coil the signal is picked up. Is it center where the stem goes into the coil or is it the leading edge of the coil? It's kind of hard to determine, so I thought maybe someone with more technical information than I might be able to shed some light? Thanks!

Marna

Default on mine,it is the center of the coil...

in the middle. the pole on my machine attaches to the coil off center leaving the pinpoint area exposed.

On my Minelab double "DD" coil it will detect everywhere and on edge.

The DD coils do not shoot down in a cone shape, it penatrates down the with of the coil

None of the coils of any detector penetrate in a cone shape. Those pics some mfg use in their ads are trying to tell you that theirs reach a greater depth. In reality, all detectors will fluctuate depending on many things at diff times. If you ever have a chance to attend a GPAA gold show,be sure to sit in on the detecting seminar.

Hi Marna, have you tried placing a coin on the ground and observe the pinpoint, and after that try closing your eyes and pinpoint then open your eyes when you think you centered the coin and see where the coil is centered. It's easy to see when the coil has an open center .As Gregory stated the DD coils have have a narrow line running the length of the coil and it's very easy to locate shallow targets with the front tip of the coil advanced towards the target at different degree angles and i rarely use the pinpoint function .What detector coil combo are you using ? It's hard for me to visualize with the solid coil. An open coil is on my wish list for my next detector (which I still haven't decided which one yet!) I can get a rough idea, but it's not as close as I'd like.
