Default Front Yard

I have a general question to ask everyone. Here's the quick story. Iam a active duty Marine.. I have 18 years in, only 2 until retirement!! Anyway, me and the wife bought our retirement house last year in Lewistown, Pa. (my hometown) She is living up there, and Iam down here in NC. The house we bought in an old (built in 1860's) victorian style farmhouse that has been upgraded over the years. Supernice house!! It was the first house built in that area. I have a huge yard, which Ive been told was where the Barn used to be. (burnt down in 1930's) and there are 2 other smaller out building still standing... Anyway here is my question....How many of you would start digging your yard up looking for treasure? I have a good feeling about the yard producing some good finds, but the wife is not all to thrilled about me tearing the yard up. Gotta keep the wife happy you know, but at the same time curosity is killing me!! Gary

I'd be digging so fast it would make your head swim. I'd get every little piece of info you could on the property from not only the public records office but the library, old timers, historical society, you name it.

Before you start digging though, find a place to practice your treasure recovery skills i.e. cutting and replacing plugs Then you can tell the wife you are aerating the yard for better grass growth

I wish you much luck and hope you get to dig in your yard soon

Hi Gary,

I too live in PA. Not sure where Lewistown is.
Hey, your not going to tear up the yard by just metal detecting it! Plugs are small and just be neat about your digging. Carry a cloth with you to lay the dirt on. I have detected at some places that were very paticular about their yard and had no trouble. Just take your time and dig a nice small plug

Thanks Greg,

Lewistown is located near State College. (central Pa.) I told the wife about being careful, but she still wasn't to hip about the whole idea. But I will prevail!!! LOL

..making holes to recover coins is just a matter of practice. you will get the hang of it fast.

Oh yes, Been to State college (Belfont) I think.

My sister lived up there in the early 1990's and I'd go up there to small game hunt Lots & lots of wildlife Its about 2 hour trip or so.

All you need to do is show your wife the digging of a plug and once she finds out there is no mess, she'll give you the go ahead.....Believe me, I know how important it is to keep the lady of the house happy and money in her purse

Good luck,

I have to agree with everyone here! Man what a great place to hunt never have to leave! Cut a horse shoe plug flip over and put excess dirt on a rag and recover your find and put dirt back and flip plug back and your wife will never know you were there! My mom was not to happy with the idea of me digging in her yard since she is a flower and lawn nut, she agreed finally to let me try one day and then I went in and got her and asked her to come out and see if she could tell were I had been digging, couldn't tell I had ever been there and she was impressed!

Happy hunting!
Pat

I'm thinkin the GY stands for gunny, that right? Welcome to the forum gunny. Lots of great people here that can help ya with all your questions. Now as far as the yard thingy, I usually locate the target with my probe, cut a slit next to it, and its not hard to fish the coin out through the slit, and then just push the two sides back together. BATA BOOM,BATA BING!
