hello all. The only proublem iv encontered in 30 years,is a dog that thought my detector was a weed wacker(guess he had a bad wacker incedent as a puppy) I carry dog snacks as this usualy works.Other than that i carry a 12 inch bowi knive(my digging tool)And i guess you could use your detector as a weapon.

Marna I know how you feel! I was detecting out from the side of a building that was out in the middle of nowhere. I kept having uneasy feelings of someone grabbing me and that they could drag me behind the building and no one would ever know. All I had was a knife and my detector! But being female I don't know if the knife would be good enough protection. If you are detecting like me with headphones on you wouldn't be able to hear someone if they were approaching from behind. And now days there are crazy people everywhere. You hear of people getting abducted all the time. I have family members telling me to carry a small pistol for protection. I have been wondering if you have to have a permit to carry a pistol say in your back pocket. I think it is best to always have a partner with you when detecting. But in my case I go a lot by myself. I do like the idea of having the pepper spray.

i think it depends on your state pat. here in N.Y you deffinatly need a permit to carry a pistol.

I don't carry a gun but i found one in a county park and turned it in to the police about 6 weeks ago.I detect parks and other properties near inner city areas and you must be aware of your surroundings at all times.I don't think i would ever consider a concealed weapon but nothing wrong with a screwdriver , a metal probe,or even a set of keys for self defense, and theres always a loud scream. I'm more afraid of pitbulls than people .HH Bill

Sometimes i carry a can of mace similar to this.. http://www.safetyrus.com/Bearpepperspray.html
It blasts a thick fog about 20 feet and will take care of just about any aggressive wild animal. I'm pretty sure its illegal to use on humans, but if one were in a life threatening situation that probably wouldnt matter.
