Hi, all,
Now no flaming; I don't want to turn this into a for-or-against firearms discussion. I already have guns, so I don't want to hear it. Does anyone carry a weapon while metal detecting? I'm starting to think it might not be a bad idea. Being a woman out in the middle of nowhere can be pretty creepy. Marna

Hi Marna
The only time I carry is when Im in the desert, around town here I dont, but I always carry a knife with me,i have a folding buck that is like my right hand ,always where I am. If you want to carry something they make non letal protection devices, check local regs before doing so !! but I have supplied my wife with a pepper spray for her key ring ,instructed on the use of it ,when and how, I was a Deputy for five years and I think that protection begins at home !! if you know what I mean ? Hi Marna!
Forget about gender! It gets doggone scary out there at times. Whenever I'm out rock collecting (mostly Agates here on the West side of WA), I carry heavy artillery (as in a .45 1911A1). There are some crazy folks and a few hungry animals out there in the woods. Carry while MD'ing can be problematic: Forget about carry and detecting on school grounds and most parks. Or having protection in your car on school grounds. One of the local towns posts that you can't "display" firearms while in the park. Doesn't mean you can't carry, it just can't be visible. When things get better financially, I'd like to carry a Walther stainless steel pistol in .380 (PPK/S?): Something small, concealable, but will still deal with any problems. Don't even consider anything smaller than .32 ACP other than a .22 LR. Avoid .25 ACP guns like the plague. HH! -Tom |

I just have a couple knives and my shovel.
But I generally feel safe as I check out the area first really well before entering. Gun is a good idea in case of some wild animals. Or protection in general. I don't think a shovel or small knife will work against a wild cat or hog. If they're that close, they are too close. Esp. since this summer I intend on do some serious driving in unfamiliar areas. Only familiarity is the research. Doug

I carry a small 38spl derringer if in city, with heavier in the car.One barrel is snake shot the other is a 38spl soft-nose.If out in the country,I carry a 380 concealled and a MK 11 on the hip. Most states you are allowed to carry on the hip without permit (my experience, anyway). In desert,it's the Springfield 1911 45.
