Exclamation Buyer's Beward - Compass Electonics

Buyers Beware! Compass Electronics

To Whom It May Concern:

I will try to make a long story short. I purchased a Coin Scanner Pro II a few weeks ago factory direct from Steve and Sue Goss, Owners of Compass Electronics. They did not take Visa so I sent them a cashier’s check by mail.

A couple of days later my wife got in an auto accident and we had to come up with a big deductible. I called Compass and asked if they had started my detector and they said they were just starting on it. I told them what happened and told them I was in a bind and needed to pay this deductible and could I please cancel my order.

Steve said, things happen to people and he would not refund my money. He now mentions that he has a no refund policy and he had spent some of the money getting parts to build the detector. I said I would pay him a restocking fee to cover his cost, but he said, he has already made up his mind and there is no way he was going to send me the money back. He then said he was going to send me the unit anyways.

At this point, I told him there refund policy was not explained or mentioned by Sue Goss (his wife) at any time during the discussion of price and options. I also told them no where on there website was there refund policy stated; only there warranty. Again Steve told me, too bad things happen to people and it was not his problem. I had already sent them a cashier’s check so I was basically stuck with no way out.

In my opinion, this is no way for a company to do business. Companies like White's, Fisher, or Tesoro would never do anything like this to someone. Honestly, at this point they started avoided phone calls and e-mails so I was concerned about ever receiving my detector. I thought it would be a good idea to send a quick email apology hoping to smooth the strong verbal conversation listed above over. I finally did receive the machine and have decided to sell it by taking a loss due to the fact I don’t want to have anything to do with Compass Electronics in any way shape or form. In the case that there may be a warranty issue, my concern is that they will treat the warranty issues with the same disregard for customer service. After doing some research and talking to past distributors that dropped the Compass product for the same reasons I have listed above concerning customer care issues and warranty.

Like I said, I purchased the detector straight from Compass factory direct, not a distributor, and after the fact, I found out most of ther distributors in the States no longer deal with them due to customer sevice and warranty issues and one of them has a pre-paid order that he has not recieved and they are not returning his calls according to him, but they have his money.

Take care

Default Tom, some history on Compass detectors

Tom, a little history for you about Compass detectors.( what little I know anyway)

Compass metal detectors were big in the late 1970s and 1980s into the 1990s, They were big like Whites, Tesoro and Fisher big players in the industry. The Company sold then had some financial problems then a big fire guted the plant later on.
After the fire Steve Goss one of the main employees bought the rights and name of the company and has continued doing repair work and building detectors on a smaller level, a lot of over seas sells and repair work.
My uncle had one when I was a kid and I always wanted one, he got me into hunting.
They made one heck of a analog machine at one time so I thought I would add one to my collection but little did I know that things had changed so much.

Default I doubt they will be around to long

if that is their way of doing business. I can say I have never seen one of those in the field.

I just bought a compass detector off of ebay. I have not gotten it yet, but thank you for letting me know about the business. I was going to buy one off of their website.

Default I would recommend Fisher or Whites new

Sir I would recommend a Fisher or Whites machine if you plan on a new one, my exsperiance with both these companys have bean great. They both make a great product and stand behind what they manufacture. ( NOTE ) I had the plastic bolt that connects the coil on my fisher crack,Called Fisher in Los Banos and they mailed me that day 4 exstra bolts no questions asked and no charge. Whites is the same way mailed me a new sticker for the controle box and it was my falt it got damaged in the first place, again no charge, great customer service.

Take Care
