double dinkie day disaster
From the land of the Bluenose.....another sunny, muggy day that was just made for swishing so after watching a rebroadcast of my interview on CBC it was out the door without a backward glance at the unmade bed and stack of dirty dishes on the counter which I'd have to take care of before the "boss" saw it and docked me a days allowance. Was in a bit of pain having been knocked off the mound twice the previous night by line drives and my chest and shin were sporting a pair of nice purple and orange "war wounds." They say the third times a charm and the next shot back at the mound bent my index finger which is now swollen in the "you are number one" position.
Undaunted by these minor injuries I was determined to have a peaceful swish as it had been a hectic pass few days with ball, umping, French Dave's visit (left me some nice scallops and deer steak) and taking newbie Rocking Rudy out for a dig so that he could get some help with his new Garrett GTA 1500 and learn a few tricks of the hobby in general. Hit a beach that is one of those once a year places and usually a good producer. With the weather being like it was the beach had an infestation of vertically challenged individuals playing under the watchful eyes of their respective charges. Fielded a few of the usual questions, put on my headphones and played dumb which I sadly realized later was not far from the truth. Coins, earings and kid rings appeared in my sieve as well as my favourite finds...two dinkies in a rather battered shape. With my pocket full of this and that I approached the life guard station and left her all the dangerous recoveries to dispose of and headed to my car.
With Goquikski a purring I took the scenic route home and got my first ever glance at a candy red Ferrari..............ummmm wondered how much clad that bouy had dug to afford that beauty? Shortly therafter this magnificant machine exited onto a side road and then it happened................Goquikski died right in the middle of the road and it took all my strength to move her to the curb. Exhausted from this effort all I could do was laugh and wonder how in the halibut I was going to get home to my housework and to work. Knowing nothing about cars (mechanically challenged) I opened the hood and did the only thing I knew which is how to check the oil which was topped up. Started walking back to a garage that I had passed and must have looked pretty pathetic in my wet attire and water shoes for a gentleman had seen my car on the lonely stretch and asked if I needed a lift to the garage which I accepted. Once there I phoned Marie who was just a tad upset as a week ago we had just had a new starter and fan belt installed. Then she lowered the boom asking the $64,000 question; "Is there any gas in the car?" No way I said as the needle was just above the "E" for enough. Couldn't be as simple as that as my luck is just not that good.
Borrowing a jerry can which I filled with my last $8 I began the journey back to my ill vehicle. Not a 100 meters from the garage a vehicle stopped and asked if I needed a lift to where I was going....obvious that I was going to a car that may have run out of petrol. Must say that Bluenosers are certainly a caring lot for their neighbours. Back at my car I poured in the gas while saying a silent prayer with the moment of truth arriving. One last prayer and I tried to start her with Goquikski immediately coming to life. Son of a seahorse my prayer had been answered! At that very moment Forest Gump would have looked like a rocket scientist next to me...da.
Drove back to the station and returned the gas can and called Marie giving her the good news which cheered up her mood considerably; at least till she got home and saw the disarray of our abode. That cost me big time when I finally strolled through the door...breakfast in bed Sunday. Lord love a duck ...just once I'd like to go a swishing with nothing happening except a few peaceful finds.
