Default The leap from analog to digital detectors

I'm wondering....am I the only person having trouble taking the quantum leap into the world of computer based programmable detectors? When my old analog 6000DI speaks to me....I understand perfectly what it's saying.

I've had the White's Eagle out a couple times, and it really befuddles me with readings that don't seem to settle down...numbers all over the map. Are you guys reading the screen...or using a multitone program (on the newer machines) to identify finds?

I'm considering selling the Eagle and getting a last generation 6000XL. It may well be the last analog machine to be made....and I would like to squirrel one away for after I have worked my current machine to death. I like to hunt with what I feel competent with....and learning the new machines is like having to learn to walk all over again when I can "run" just fine "as is".

I read an opinion recently that stated..."If you're just getting into this hobby...that 20 year old machine just isn't going to get it".....to which I reply....hogwash. The suggestion that there are no coins, rings and artifacts left within range of even the oldest TR machines without discrimination or analog meters....seems to me to be pure fantasy, likely dreamed up by detector manufacturers and salesmen. Go to the right places....and the 3-7 inch deep coins are still lying there in impressive numbers.

Your input appreciated.

Can we teach an old dog a new trick if it's still amused by the old one? Is there some advantage that I am unaware of. Frankly, I'd have to think long and hard before I'd want to dig 14 inches for a penny, so aside from increased depth, what are the pros and cons of the new millenium "wands"?

Hi Wyatt,
Your 6000 DI analog detector is a good one, I've always liked them as I owned one myself for a few years back in the mid 1990's.
If I were you I would stick to it for now as it is working well for you. There is nothing wrong with the analog meters.

As for looking at my screen on my ExplorerII, I think I told you that I might of glanced at it 3 or 4 times yesterday. I am learning the sound pitch of each type of target. The higher pitches are silver and the lower sounds are cooper/gold/foil.
While using my coin program I dig every signal and dug 3 pieces of junk yesterday.

I could use your detector and be quite content with using it beside the EX II

I've generally been very pleased with it...but keep wondering...is there something I'm missing out on by sticking to the golden oldie. I guess if I were to give up on this machine...and no longer believed it was suitable for what I wanted to do....it would be easier to move onto the new machines. I have not been able to condemn this one though. It just keeps finding stuff, and since I'm used to it....I have stuck with it.

Hey Wyatt

I bought two machines a few years back, a di pro 5900 and the eagle, I used them both and ended up liking the eagle !!

I think it is just a matter of comfort, as you know my eagle is an older machine ,but I believe every bit as competent as the newer versions of the same technology.

If your old machine does for you what you want it to , I cant see any reason to change!!

should you decide to sell the eagle ,please give the forum a crack at it !!

Rick

My Eagle is one of the very first ones made.....still the familiar blue and white. I am considering letting go of it to buy a "last of the Mohicans" 6000XL to keep on hand as a back-up. I also have the Compass that is from the 80s that will probably be hitting the block.

Send me a private email if you might be interested in either or both. The Eagle has 3 coils and a soft luggage style carrying case. No extras with the Compass, which has an 8 inch coil.

Default Hi Wyatt!

Mr. Silver here! I like the older machine( my machine is a Whites Coinmaster® 6/DB series 1)
I just love it!! I just got 2 new nicads for it,
coil cover, extension cable from Kellyco. I must love that machine! I like to get a newer machine,
but i can not afford too, plus I cannot figure that computer screen either. I just like meter myself. I like to get a Bounty Hunter 505 a Wal-Mart just for fooling around with. Does anybody got a 505 you can tell more about the machine?

You know, I have a 6000DI Pro sl that I bought used and that I absolutely love. So far the meter has never been wrong and I do get good depth from it 8" or 9" on some of the coins I've found. However, I have been looking at some of the newer machines because that thing just gets heavy after a couple hours. I wish I knew some way to lighten this thing up but I guess I'll end up getting something else. That being said I doubt I'll ever give up this great machine.

The weight doesn't bother me too much. I guess I'm used to it, having used this machine since it was new in 1987. After a long hiatus, I had some aches and pains...but I decided to just work through the pain, and lo and behold, I can swing this machine for hours on end again....like when I was younger.

I enjoy the accuracy of the analog readout. This morning I found a 1918 mercury dime, and I was absolutely certain that I was digging a silver dime, because that's what the machine "told" me was there. It's almost always right on the money...to coin a phrase....no puns intended.
