Default You can't beat hunting at night...

90% of my detecting happens after dark for a few reasons...

No people looking at you like your an alien, it's quite and peaceful.

I use an XLT with a lighted screen. I also use a mini mag light with a red lense suspended by string around my neck long enough to go into the hole I dug to search for the coin.

WORKS WONDERFUL!

I've hunted at night several times. You can go to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up a headlamp. Its doesn't weigh anything, cost about $15 and it fits on your ballcap or on your head. The lense itself isn't very big, but it packs a good when when it comes to throwing out light. There are 3 settings on it.

1. A large stream of light. If you're out in the woods, you can use that setting, since it doesn't really matter.

2. Small white LED lights. Not as bright as the first one, but direct light, and

3. Small red LED lights. This is the option I use because I live in a rural area. The red lights provide adequate lighting for both the ground and seeing your screen. The other thing I really like about it, is it doesn't attract attention and is very hard to see from even 30 ft away or so. So unless someone is looking directly at you, your inconspicuous.

I'm glad this thread got revived. I get home from work about 10pm so I've been pondering some night hunting. I might start out in my own yard to get some practice in familiar territory. Then there's a huge farmyard I've got my eye on but I'm still in the research stage in it. But I could stop there on my way home at night since no one lives there now.

Looking forward to the article on night hunting!

i usually hunt at night when i can do so without alerting john q. law. i have a stream light that straps on my head. i hate it! i only turn it on when my md finds a target so i'm constantly turning it off and on. it has 3 settings so you gotta hit the button 3 times to turn it off. it's a real pain in a trashy area. target has a nice head lamp with a red led "so's not to interfere with your natural night vision" problem is it has 3 modes also. first you turn on one bright white led, then turn on 3 bright white led's by this time your "natural night vision" is shot. then comes on the red led. what's the point? i thought about the maglite with a lense but i prefer three straps aroud the head. the light's a little more secure and easier to aim.
as for lighting the display... anyone ever try a book light? you can buy little colored rubber thingies at the auto parts store. they're used to change the color of the light in your cars ash tray or glove box. they just slip on a small bulb.

Default Just dont forget.....

What Bill Cosby says "The monsters come out at 10 oclock" It's funny how you can be in the woods during the day and hear something movin around in the bushes and its nothing, but at night its like WTH's that ! I once had a deer abought give me a heartattack one night !

Talking Night Hunting

This was a main event in the Leadville Open Treasure Hunts and other organized hunts I have attended. No lights allowed, headsets required... the planted targets were "interesting" as well. Marshmello with coin inside sprayed black, rubber fishing worms in hole with coin, small fuzzy stuffed animals with coin inside, ping pong ball painted black with coin inside, latex glove filled with water with a coin tied inside, and a classic that I was fortunate enough to find - a small animal skull with the gold coin taped to the bottom..I droped it when I first placed my fingers into the eye sockets when fishing for it in the dark..then said "wait a minute.." and retrieved it while the Hunt Master was in stitches. This has always been good for testing your actual skill at locating/pinpointing/retrieving targets and a few yelps, squeels, and expletives as well..then competitors go away happy and reveling in their experiences. It's the next best fun to the Pinpointer Only Hunt I came up with to wrap up the weekend.

I have regularly gone out at night to detect in local parks etc. just because it is cooler then. I have the LED type head lamp that gives off a good glow without being overwhelming and has a battery life of about 70 hours. It's always a good idea to have a hunt partner along as well.
