Default To anyone

Hey can i use a handheld security scanner to metal detect for coins
and treasures on the ground? I have been given a Garret Super Scanner and have
thought about hooking it up to a stick. Do you guys think it will work?

if you have been finding coins and such things with it already i cant see any reason why not! i mean it probably would work like a basic model metal detector surely?? but i dont know about depth or discrimination of metals but you could just try it anyway. but Petey dont fix it to a metal pole!! eh! haha! good luck hope it works for you

Hey petey,

That scanner has has a 93 kHz frequency so it would be interesting to see what it would do. Let us us know how it works. Put it on a fiberglass pole and you may have a bigfoot coil. HH Bill

Im sure that it will work, although it will detect all metals all the time,, Lots of digging !!

If I remember right it also has a single tone and will not change much even on size of the target.

Default Why go through the effort?

You'll spend time attaching it to a stick, you'll spend time finding alot of pull tabs and junk because it doesn't have discrimination capabilities.

Go out and buy yourself a good detector and have it over with!

Default Idea for the hand held detector

Just a theory but maybe the handheld scanner could be used to search old rock walls and wall in abandoned houses and buildings. Once you figure out what center the wall studs are set on, unless they used a lot of wallpaper tacks it may work for that. Don't know what type of pentration you might get when scanning ground though.. May have a problem with ground balance.

Default I second the motion for getting a better detector...

The unit you have will work, but of course has its limitations.
As an FYI, the higher frequencies will light up metals like Gold and Alumimum like a Christmas tree, but will be less sensitive to Copper and Silver.
I'd go nuts if I had to dig everything to figure out what it was that the unit spotted. A detector like the DFX that gives a metal type ID is indispensable!

I agree. You'd have to have a lot of time on your hands to screw around with this unit.
