First Day Out (with the Ace 250)
Put the new Ace 250 to the ground yesterday for about an hour in 2 different spots in coin mode. I didn’t find anything of value, but did gain some good knowledge (which at this early stage is no less important to me).
I did a sweep of a field close to the house for about 20 minutes until it started to rain. Found a good deal of aluminum cans, but that was it (still looking for that first find worth keeping/noting ). It’s a good-sized field, but I’m not sure that there will be anything of value there. My primary intent was to familiarize with the machine after several test runs in the back yard this week. I’ll probably hit this spot again soon for more practice, as there's a lot of ground to cover. The only down-side to this spot as a “practice field” is that there are A LOT of roots, which makes digging a challenge.
Later that day, I hit a new soccer field (built in/from a wheat field a few years back). Being a relatively new spot, I figured that I might find some loose change along the sidelines. Of the 3 fields, I spent about 40 minutes searching 1 of the field’s sidelines (then ran out of time and had to leave). Again, no luck outside of aluminum (*this time I found smaller pieces of aluminum cans, as opposed to full-sized cans in the other field). This wasn’t a total loss in my eyes though, as I learned a few things:
- The practice pinpointing was very helpful.
- I gained practice with the tones of larger items versus smaller items.
And probably most important…
- I learned that overhead power lines can cause havoc with the machine! Several large (Dynamo) power lines run overheard of these soccer fields. I noticed that the machine had a tendency to go berserk when directly under them.
Not a total loss in my mind . I have several other areas scouted out, but will probably hold off on those unit I increase my proficiency levels. Glad I got volume-control headphones as well, and might buy a coil cover soon. The doggone clay-based soil here is VERY hard to dig in as well - might be better off getting out right after a good rain....
