City Park Question

So, I'm pretty new. I've not been doing this but a few months now. No problems, mind you, but lots of questions...

I'm living near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and would love to search some of the very old (very public) parts of the town. There are at least two parks that have been there since about the early 1600's when the spanish inhabbited this area. My problem is that I'm nervous about doing so with sooooo many folks around. Santa Fe is touchy enough. I've sent email to the city manager (as he appears to be the closest thing to a jurisdictional body as I can determine) about policy, etc., but as of yet no response. Anyway, what would some of you suggest? Just go forward and assume it's ok (I can't find anything specific in the city codes) or???

Hey Doug;
Actually I found that the best way to obtain local laws concerning metal detecting city property is to go right to city hall and ask them what kind of restrictions they have concerning this topic. I have found in most instances they just want it left the way you found it. Oh and if you do just DO IT without asking , it could cost you your detector and a fine.

I had a sister living in santafe for several years and there is a parks department there I asked and no permit required but that was 12 yrs ago too. You need to look up the parks and recreation depatment in the city and call em they will answer you.
REMEMBER the golden rule...leave it like ya found it minus the trash you pick up...................................

It is best to ask in person. If you call than anyone may pick up the telephone and say no. Present yourself with a neat clean appearence and a smile, they will find it hard to say no.

When I first started detecting a little over a year ago I would contace the parks dept. for all the citys I hunted, not one city I ever called had any restrictions on metal detecting, I dont even call now and have never had any trouble, same goes for schools, I havent been turned down and have quite calling, now of course i am in Dayton Ohio so you do need to find out for your area but most likely it should be ok, make sure to fill in all your holes nice and take trash, that way when some little old lady comes up giving you a hard time, show her the trash your taking out, as far as all the people around, wear headphones and for the most part you will be left alone.

if you have the time try hunting early or late when the large crowds aren't there. keeps you out of others way. good luck.

i think it depends on where you are. i have contacted the city parks and recreation department about hunting some of the old parks in wilmington delaware, and they dont allow it. however they do allow it in most county parks go figure.
