I live in NW Pa. and I was wondering if anyone here knows whether the areas around drake's well and pithole are open for detecting? I figure that would probably be the best area around here to maybe find a gold coin :)

Drakes Well is the first oil well in the U.S.A. So forget detecting there, it is a historical site and very unlikely to be open to detecting.

I often detect AROUND an oil well that is a historical landmark in my town ! Frank Phillips , founder of Phillips Petrolium Co. First oil well is now in the middle of a park !! I went to the County Assessors office and got WRITTEN PERMISSION to hunt there .I explaned my intentions and there wasnt a problem !!! Check with your County Assessors office and inquire about detecting AROUND Drakes well !!! It cant hurt !!! All they can say is "NO" !!! There is massive amounts of iron around the well that I hunt BUT I managed to pick out a 1862 Large cent !!! The well I hunt has a fence around the oil deric itself and that is all the people I talked to were concerned about not disturbing the deric !!! GIVE IT A TRY !! Make sure ya fill them holes in !!!
