Default First silver find – Woo Hoo! – and a question on cleaning it

I went to an old abandoned amusement park in my area that was opened in 1937 and closed in 1994. The township bought the property and the area is now just a plain old park. Anyways, I was detecting in an area around the still visible bumper car ride and dug up what looked like a silver token about 6 inches down. Having read in the forums to resist the urge to wipe it clean an potentially scratch silver, I put the coin in my pouch and continued on.

When I arrived home, I put the coin under some warm water and gently washed it with hand soap to expose a 1943 silver nickel. Now the nickel still has some dirt/debris on it and I was hoping I could get some advice on best ways to clean. I though I had read before that some white vinegar might help but I wasn’t sure if that was to be used on clads only.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Default Oj

After i clean my coins in warm water to get the crud off, the more heavily tarnished ones i soak in a glass of orange juice overnight....the mild citric acid works great.

I gave Boobies a whirl (the white vinegar) and it cleaned up real nice. Thanks much for both suggestions.
