Default Newbe needs help

I recently bought my father a metal detector for Father’s Day. He retired a couple of years ago and he enjoys futzing around outside, so I thought it would be an ideal gift. I gave it to him a day before Father’s Day and he’s extremely excited—I think this will be a great hobby for him. I’m thinking of getting one for myself.

I picked the detector up at Pro-Bass shops and I wish I knew about this site before because I picked him up a Bounty Hunter-Lone Star and many people on this site recommends the Garrett ACE 250 as a good starter (what can I say, I’m an impulse buyer). I hope the detector does good for him.

After opening the box and reading some articles on the internet, I never realized how many treasure hunting enthusiasts there are. And I never realized how complex detecting is—between discrimination, auto-notch, all metal, a couple of knobs and a lot of beeps; it’s seems overwhelming for a newcomer.

I have a couple of questions. 1. What advice do you guys and gals give to a newcomer to detecting? 2. We live in a suburb right outside Chicago, and even though the area has a hundred plus years of history and my parents live next to a large field with a couple of parks, how does a person detect and find interesting artifacts in a more urban community? It’s not like we live under a civil war battlefield or on the ocean’s edge.

Any advice would help.

Thanks,

Phil
