Unhappy Vanishing signals ... Fake Signals?

I did my 2nd field treasure hunt yesterday, I went to a place which used to be a very transited road like 100 years ago, now its hardly used... I only got a couple of coins 1984 and 1989, no major finding.

However, the detector was so silent that sometimes I had to throw the keys and pass it over to know it was working. I had discrimination on coins and sensitivity of 5 which worked pretty well for me last week, when I found all those bullets and stuff.

I have three cases where I am in doubt.

Case 1 :

While sweeping an area, I picked up a bell tone, and sounded just like a coin (or a bottlecap) I passed several times and the bell continued, so I pinpointed and got how deep it was, it said 6 inches, so, I dug up and found nothing, I carefully examined the soil extracted from the hole, but nothing there. Tried to get the belltone again and it simply vanished.

My detector is a GTI-2500 with the standard coil.

Case 2 :

If I increase the sensibilty above 8 I got readings all over, even in discriminate coins mode... but they are erratic, If I try to pinpoint one, it ALWAYS marks a large object at 12+ inches deep. I dug up once and there was nothing.

Sometimes I press (and keep pressed) the pinpoint button and gives nothing, release it and then press it again and suddenly get a reading.

I don't think my GTI is malfunctioning, since it marks with precision many things, however, I am having a hard time trying to understand its behaviour on these cases.

Case 3 :

When I pass the detector over a tree, doesn't matter if its a dead or a live one, it gives me readings (in all metal mode). Any ideas or experience while searching on a tree?

Why a tree? because people used to stash things in the hollows of trees

Maybe I'll record a short video to explain better this situations

Later

Hi Reznor, I have never tried the tree thing so I went outside just a few minutes ago and waved the coil across a live tree and then a dead tree, I did get readings on both but I dropped the sensitivity down to about half and the readings stopped. I don't think you have a technical problem with your 2500 because I have experienced the same thing after digging several inches and no target, maybe. I have been using the Vibraprobe pinpointer and it has helped me find coins that simply are hard to see in the dirt pile. The erratic behaviour maybe due to some interference near you like power lines or a transmitter and by setting the sensitivity lower you can usually get rid of the problem. As far as pinpointing with the detector if you lose the signal then move the coil away from the suspected target and let off of the pinpoint button. Then move back over the target area and press the pinpoit button again and this usually corrects the problem. I hope this is helpful and it just takes a little time to get used to a new and different detector. I'm sure you will master that 2500 very quickly Reznor. Ok good luck and if you have anymore questions just give a call because that is what I am here for. CU later and God Bless.

Thanks John, it's always good to hear that someone else has the same issues that I have, and, in a certain way is the usual behaviour.

But I am concerned because tomorrow night I'll be going to a friend's house where people have been claiming for a long time that they see a woman who vanishes beneath a tree, some others say that they witnessed a flame at the feet of that same tree, and my friend's grandmother said that she used to see a white rabbit on that same tree.

I immediately tought of my Eagle Eye but when you put that add-on the detector cannot be operated in anything else than ALL METAL mode... and in ALL METAL mode is a pain to decide wheter a signal is good or fake.

How much depth can the 2500 can reach with the standard coil?

On the side, John, I've emailed you from your webpage, I need to know about the Vibraprobe. Check your email.

Later!
