The answer is self evident....stop digging penny signals. That's what I have done recently. I just did a 9 day stint where I decided that, since there should still be silver coins lying in the park where I was hunting...the time swinging the coil looking specifically for silver coin readings....80 and above....was better spent than digging an endless procession of pennies. There are a lot of penny/dime signals in this park. I may miss some wheaties.....but it's worked for me since I would rather dig silver anyway. I do dig all quarter signals...including clad. They tend to add up fast. Greg and I went out on saturday morning, and between saturday afternoon and sunday, I gathered 16 more dollars worth of clad quarters.
In 9 days, I've dug 24 silver coins (9 quarters and 15 dimes), and found enough clad quarters along the way to buy 10 other silver coins for my pouch. The coins I bought were 1 silver dollar and 10 silver halves.....even greater silver weight than those I found. If you are in an area that you are reasonably sure has silver....try it. You might just be surprised at how much time you spend digging pennies....time that might be better spent searching for that elusive signal. If you collect pennies.......well, never mind then Best of luck to all of you. Wyatt Earp Last edited by Wyatt Earp; 07-31-2006 at 04:56 PM. |

I tried this the other day and boy was I surprised, I found a ring, and about 7 quarters.
But then all those hits I got that I passed over started nagging me... So I went back and dug up a bunch of pennies, and a cool 1976 copper medallion with chain (the chain was broken). it was fun, but it would have been more fun to have a couple of quarters in there, but I had already gotten all of them. So, I guess if you are short on time, dig the silver, but if you have plenty of time, dig it all. The medallion was one of the coolest things I have found so far. |

This style of hunting does leave things behind, and when it gets cool enough, and I get run short on sites to hunt, I'll go dig those signals in the lower ranges. I will concentrate however, on those that are at least 3 inches deep.
Then when I have that range of signals cleared, I'll hunt nickels, pulltabs, and gold rings at all depths. There's no real supply of gold rings in this area. I live in the poorest county, and one of the more sparsely populated counties in Pennsylvania. It's just a different approach that makes each hunt a "specialty" hunt. I think that adds interest as well. It's a challenge to search that way...to me. Wyatt Earp |
