Default old well excavation

Just wondering if anyone has ever dug out an old well.I know of several that date to coloniel times herebouts and have been thinking of trying to dig one out.I know its potentaly hasardous to my health But theres one i found that is now dry and about 10 foot deep and there are a lot of nice very old pottery and glass shards scattered about.I should have brought a flashlight but when the sun comes through the trees just right you can see the glitter of glass down there. So of cource bein as how treasure hunting is in my blood the curiosity is killin me !

Terry,
all i can say is be careful, careful, careful!!!!!! This is one thing that should be done with all caution and safety first and is not something to take lightly. A cave in, even in 5 feet of dirt can be deadly! If this is something you are thinking of doing then research, read, research and read some more! I for one am probably not brave enough to try it with out someone who knows a bit about what they are doing and even then they had better have a back hoe tracktor to dig it out with!! LOL! Good luck!

Not to worry ! safty first,I once had a well pump that was giving me trouble,so to fix it i had to hang headfirst into the well opening. I tyed my self to my car,a tree AND strapped a 2x4 to my waist ! I actualy had nightmares for weeks ! This well im thinking about is on a small hill so i'm thinking i can dig from the side.I also plan to have someone there with a cell phone ready to call 911 !
