I work summers and pidle around winters (up for some extreme mding anyone ) so i get out most weekends and somtimes after work.Night hunting is an excelent time to hunt ! Its cool when its hot, peacful and quiet, best during a full moon. Twice now though i have had close calls with some ornery old bulls on a moonlit night and it can be a bit spooky ! Boobie, dont worry Bill Cosby says the monsters dont come out till 10 pm !

Joanne,

I hunt mainly at dark. The most peacefull time of the day. I use a small maglite hung from a string around my neck and drop that in the hole when I've cut my plug...works nice. I use an xlt with backlight.

Nighthunter - that is interesting to know. I am kind of a loner and prefer to hunt when no one is around. Saves having to answer all kinds of questions. I live in a very safe area so safety is really not an issue. I may try night hunting. My BH really does not have any bells and whistles so do not need to see anything. I just hunt by sound. If this works then I may have just added some extra hours to my MD day. Thanks JoAnne

Joanne,

I'm kinda the same way...I don't like people looking at me thinking "geeze, he must be hard up for cash" when they don't know that I toss all of my clad (I only dig deep signals 3-4" or deeper). In Ohio it seems that all of the older coins are at least 4" deep. I've dug memorial pennys at 6" already.

I hunt mostly in open fields where there once was a farm or log cabin.

Geeze Nighthunter - I'll take your clad!!!!! LOL MY BH is not capable of going very deep. I have managed to find a couple of what I think are civil war buttons and a gold ring plus lots of clad. I just enjoy being in the fresh air and the thrill of what did I find. Hapy Hunting. JoAnne

You'll get to a point where you get a better detector and get pissed everytime a clad coin comes up.

Now, with that said, I will dig and keep quarters.

I know I dont get out at all any more. not since my car accident last year. Back in October I had surgery to repair the damage and now I'm getting ready to get out there. Sept.16 I'm heading to NJ shore for some beach detecting.

I would like to thank all of you for the great tips and for sharing your stories and finds.

Doug
