Default Practice

Tried a lake beach for the first time a few days ago and I knew it was well hunted by more experienced folks than me. I guess I dug the pull tabs, foil, & bottle caps they rejected but I gained the experience and it was fun. I was suprised how clean & "junk free" it was but it's a little cleaner now. I'm gonna try another beach next week but I have a few questions. How far out in the water do you go and is the coil end on my XLT waterproof?

Default Lake Beach Hunting

BUTCHB, IF YOU ARE USING A LAND DETECTOR DON'T IMMERSED THE CONTROL BOX! The rest of the coil is waterproof. You may want to chest mount the unit so you can extend your reach into the water! Eventually you need to buy a waterproof detector because no matter how careful you are sooner or later your detector will take a dunking! Also to venture into deeper water a long handled scoop is a neccessity. Hope this helps.....

You should be able to go out as deep as you want.

BUT DO NOT GET THE ELECTRONICS WET.
That would not be good at all.

The coil is waterproof, just make sure the connection from the cable is secure. If you are unsure put some waterproof sealant around it. If you have a coil cover you should take it off of the coil and get any sand out of in between it and the coil.
I have used mine in the water quite often with nice results.

hello, first if you're diggin pull tabs that will eventually pay off with jewelery , dont be one of those that passes up the tabs. believe me it will all be worth it when you find a ring!! i reccomend the whites beach hunter or garrett infinium, but the surfmaster pi and garrett seahunter are also good machines and less expensive, but stay away from the off brand detectors that are all over ebay. believe me they are junk. hope this helps good luck and hh, jeff

Default Waterproof Detectors

I would recommend the Garrett Seahunter, White's Beachhunter or the Whites's PI. I use the Garrett Seahunter Mark 1 and set the discrimination at zero and dig everything. Small nails, bobby pins, and paperclips, etc make a double blip in the audio and after a while it is easy to distinguish between these and the non-ferrous signals! Also if you venture into waist or deeper water a long handled scoop is a neccesity!! HOPE THIS HELPS............
